Summary: Lancelot came to see Arthur.
Arthur sat in his chair, his posture erect and proud. He was still a King, thought Lancelot, even at a kitchen able.
"My lord." Lancelot felt compelled to bow but resisted the urge.
"Don't call me that." Lancelot nodded. "Sit down. Please," the King added gently. Lancelot obeyed, is eyes never quite looking into Arthur's.
"What happened to us my fiend," asked Arthur after a long minute of silence.
"What do you mean my..." Lancelot stopped himself short, the question suspended in the air.
"I mean that." He gestured vaguely around him. " Why can't we be friends anymore?" Arthur caught Lancelot eyes, trapping him into his gaze, his brown eyes burning.
"My lord..." started Lancelot unable to help himself under Arthur's scrutiny. "I betrayed you. I betrayed our dreams and hope."
"It was millennia ago."
"Still, because of me ruined came upon Camelot." He lowered his eyes, unable to sustain Arthur's gaze any longer.
"Stop blaming yourself for things you didn't do." His voice was authoritative, ordering his soldier to obey. Lancelot opened his mouth to protest but Arthur didn't give him the time to speak. "I was not blameless. I did a lot of wrong. I lost a son and created an enemy."
"You we young," tried to defend Lancelot.
"So were you." He paused. "So we're we all."
Lancelot wanted to protest but Arthur silenced him with a hard look. "It doesn't matter anymore. It never mattered. We were a dream, an illusion, a hope to the people. We were never real, not like they thought. They made us into semi-god, into legends. We were not." He paused. "We were human. Nothing more."
Lancelot remained silent. "I have long forgiven you my friend. The past is gone and cannot be change. There are a lot of things I regret but I cannot change them. I have reconcile myself with that. We did the best we could. We planted the seeds of their legends. We gave them our heart and soul."
Arthur rose to his feet. "Now rise my friends an embrace me." He opened his arms. "You are forgiven. You have always been."
Lancelot tentatively got to his feet, advancing slowly toward his King. He stopped a step away from Arthur. His eyes were kind and as truthful as they had always been. He had never been able to lie, not when his eyes were visible. He closed the gap between them and wrapped his arm and his friend, encompassing him as hard as he could against him. Arthur gently stroked his head as a child needed to be soothe. It felt good.
Lancelot finally stepped back, his eyes glittering with tears. "Arthur..."
He friend smiled in response. All was forgiven, a new life could begin away from the past, the memories and guilt.
