Miranda could remember when it had all started. She had been a mere child then and to much of Frank surprise she had already been fearless and adventurous.

She remembered when she had found the chest in the garden shed. She had been forbidden to enter it but she had never been one to listen to her parents much. She had crawled her way under the broken door to discover a pile of old junk. She had almost been disappointed when after an hour of digging she still had no idea who had lived in the house before her and what kind of people they had been. She had been on then verge of giving up for some other adventures when she had found then old chest. It had been filled with wonders, objects of that other world she didn't know yet. There had been an old broken watch with five aiguilles. There had been an old picture of a gentleman dressed in a late 19th century fashion. There had been the black pearl. She still remembered vividly the feeling of taking it between her fingers for the first time. It had felt warm and slick. It had felt like hers. She had closed her fist around it, letting the warmth spread into her before pocketing it away in her trousers.

She remembered the first time she had realised this pearl was much more than a mere toy, a gateway to another world, another life. She had been lying in bed, marvelling at the hidden chest in the shed. She had looked at the pearl on her bed table. It had almost seemed to be calling her. She had not resisted. She had taken it into her hand and rolled it between her fingers in a pattern that was strangely meaningful. And she had disappeared. She had gone somewhere else, someplace else.

She remembered her first sight of the other world. It had been all red, black, and transparent. In her world it had been all grey, black and white. It had been like discovering colours. She had dived into it without a thought. She had wanted to run away into the wild at the edge of the city, where it was all green, brown, pink, orange, red, yellow... An explosion of colours in her eyes. But the wild was forbidden. It was the domain of other people, of strange people who didn't use stone, metal and glass. A world of earth. She had quickly forgotten about them.

Almost twenty years later she still had the chest hidden away. It was in the attic under a mountain of dust and spider web. It had been her secret for all those years. It had been her life. She looked down at the table surface. Her life, she thought. Was it really that simple, that easy? She had had a life her in the black and white world. She had had parents. She even had had some friends. But no one had ever known about her hidden chest, about the meaning of the black pearl, about her life. She raised her head to the ceiling. Maybe it was time to go, to make a choice and disappear into one of the world. She placed her hand into her jeans pocket and rubbed the pearl. It was still warm and slick under her touch, still calling her. She closed her eyes and rolled it into the unknown and yet familiar pattern.

She blurred out of existence.
