Title: Two worlds
Fandom: Original (Miranda)
Prompt: #311 - Discordance
Warnings: None.
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: All mine
Beta: None, so any mistakes you see are mine.
Summary: ...she knew deep inside of her that this game couldn't go on forever.
The two worlds were so different and yet so similar. The same beings populated them, but the beliefs were not the same. The events were distinctive to each world and nothing was really overlapping.
Miranda knew both world. She had been born in one, educated in one. She had grown up in the other, learned in the other. She sometimes wondered if that made her part of both worlds or of none. She was never fully a citizen of any of those worlds, her heart would always be divided. She knew in which world her life lay but she wasn't ready to give up the other. The one that had seen her grown up and learn was the one she wanted to live in. It was full of wonder and excitment. It was exotic. But then it was only exotic because she had first known her world, the one she had been born in. She had ignored the existence of the other world for twelve years and she had never believed she would want to live somewhere else. Only now she did.
She knew she didn't have to give up her first world entirely. She could still visit her family and friends. Nothing would stop her from coming, but how would she explain her disappearance from the face of the Earth? How could she explain to her relatives and friends that she was going to live in another world, a place where they couldn't come, couldn't even imagine. She knew they would believe her mad. She could show them how she disappeared and they might get intrigued but would they choose to trust her words? She wasn't sure. This world had lost so much of its magic. She knew she should try and explain to them. She owed them the truth and couldn't just disappear but that meant taking the risk of losing them? She thought that it might be easier to pretend than to come clean. Though she knew deep inside of her that this game couldn't go on forever, they would get suspicious, they would want explanations, they would want the truth.
In the other world it was easy. She had come there. Her friends on that side of the universe knew who she was, where she came from and she never had to explain why and where she disappeared to when she couldn't be found anywhere. She was simply in her first world, she was in that somewhere else. They had trouble to picture it but they had old legends, old stories talking of strange other worlds, they had always believed her. They had been shocked at first to discover her but they had been unable to deny the truth.
She often felt like she belonged in her adopted world more. There she could be herself, all of herself. No lies, no hidden secrets, no discordance.
Miranda looked at the pearl on her bedside table. She extended her hand to reach for it. No, she thought. She couldn't evade, shouldn't flee. She had to tell them. She had to let them know about her other life, her other home.
