Summary: Josh knew Mike's new supposed great plan was going to turn a disaster
Josh knew Mike's new supposed great plan was going to turn a disaster. Mike had seen this trick in a movie on TV. Of course that didn't mean it wouldn't work but it was a movie and the characters didn't take the time to explain the ins and outs of what they were doing, which meant Mike had no idea what of what he was doing.
"Mike...," he started again protestively. He was hoping that if he protested enough time Mike would get fed up and abandon his idea. But as he friend turn around to face him he could see this wasn't going to work. Mike's face was radiant with excitment and his entiry body was still unable to stay still for even a fraction of a second.
"I swear it's going to work. We just need to bind the rope to that tree." Josh relunctantly took the rope that was handed to him.
"What knot do I need to make," he asked now indifferent. Mike was going to make him help no matter what, he might as well give up now and fulfill his role. He had warned his cousin more than enough times. When things would go wrong he couldn't be blamed.
"Doesn't matter. Just make it tight."
Josh obeyed silently while Mike was setting up the net on the forest ground. When he finished and focused his attention back to his friend, Josh could see him trying to mask his trap under fallen leaves. He shook his head in despair. There wasn't that many fallen leaves yet and the amount Mike was regrouping just looked ridiculous, but Josh didn't say anything about that. Instead he asked a question. "What is the point of all this again?"
"Fun."
Josh shook his head. He should have known better than to ask. Sending Mike's brother in the air trapped in a net wasn't his idea of fun at all, but what choice did he have? He couldn't stay at home with their grumpy aunt and do chores all day, could he? He did briefly consider spending the Summer on his own but that would have meant confronting his aunt every night and her blaming him for being a bad family member.
"Let's hide." Mike grabbed him on the arm and led him behind the big tree that was displaying the rope.
They had to wait only five minutes before Mike's little brother came their way. Mike could barely keep slient as his brother walked towards the net, completely unaware of the trap awaiting him. It was only when his brother walked on the net and away from it that Mike finally became still.
"Told you it wouldn't work," finlly said Josh a faint note of triumph in his tone.
"But... what...," started Mike incoherently ignoring Josh. He jumped away from the tree as soon as his brother was out of view and ran to the net. As soon as he touched it he was sent flying into the air.
"It worked! I knew it would work," shouted Mike from his trap.
Josh shook his head. It was going to be a long summer.
