Summary: "Miranda no!"

"Miranda no!"

Pearl hurried her steps to catch the other girl but that didn't seem to make any difference, Miranda was still way ahead of her.

"It doesn't work like that..," she finished hopelessly in whisper.

She stopped for a second to regain her breath. She was thinking of stopping, of letting the other girl go but she couldn't, not when she could still see her. She started to run this time, desperatly wanting to catch up with Miranda.

As her steps started to echo off the dirt road, Miranda turned her head, her eyes filled with tears and anger.

"Wait," cried Pearl, extending her hand to grab Miranda's arm. As she did, she pressed it hard against her palm. She heard the other girl exclaim in surprise and pain.

"Sorry," she whispered. She wasn't though and they both knew it. She had wanted to make sure Miranda wouldn't disappear, not without it and grabbing her was the quickest and easiest way.

Miranda took her hand out of her pocket and for a second Pearl relaxed. She was staying, at least for a few more seconds.

"I'm sorry Miranda," she repeated, her voice broken and eyes filling with tears. It wasn't about grabbing an arm anymore and Miranda knew it.

"And so what! Is that supposed to make it alright," the question was shouted at her.

"No its not. But using the rock to disappear isn't going to change anything."

Miranda's jaw tightened.

"It won't erase what happen, it won't change the past."

Pearl could see Miranda's fingers itching to get back into her pocket, to the rock.

"Fleeing is no use."

"Staying no use," came the bitter reply.

"I'm here," said Pearl camly, her eyes staring deep into Miranda's. "I'm here," she repeated.

Miranda stared back at her, not moving.

"But he's gone," she said after a long minute of silent. "He's gone," she repeated softly, her voice breaking at the end of her sentence.

Pearl remained silent. She took a step forward and enlaced Miranda into her arms. She carressed her back tenderly, trying to ease the pain away although she knew it wouldn't work, but she wanted Miranda to know that she was here, that there was no need to flee, to pretend it didn't happen and to switch to her other life, erasing the recent memories with a stroke on the rock.

"They killed him." Miranda's voice was strangled as she let go of the words, of the reality. Her hands grabbed Pearl's shirt as a lifeline. Pearl hold on to her a little bit tighter, fighting the urge to cry. She had to be strong for Miranda, not let go of her emotions or she knew her friend would flee, pretend it was all a lie but she needed her. No matter if she was broken and in tears, Pearl needed to see her, feel that Miranda was still here and very much alive. As long as she was, everything would end up alright. It had to.
