Ridiculous
“You’re insane, Kate! Why would you be so stupid to do a thing like this?!” Grissom yelled at his wife, not caring that she was shrinking under his stare. He knew she was a little on the strange side, but he never thought she’d pull such a crazy stunt.
Katie Jo tried to smile, barely protecting her fragile fighting spirit as she replied. “Well, I thought it was stupid enough for you to have to fight in a war that doesn’t really matter.”
“That’s just it, Kate! You thought!” Grissom fumed, the others that were watching almost swearing that they saw his ears turning red. “When I left, I expected you to stay home and take care of our son. Now here you are practically on the front lines of a war I’m getting paid to fight in! And that’s another thing – why were you foolish enough to leave our son alone?!”
“I didn’t leave him alone, though.” Katie Jo’s smile was beginning to fail her the angrier her husband became. Maybe this was as bad an idea as he claimed it was. “Marsha’s taking care of him.”
“Oh that’s just great! Our kid’s going to grow up thinking you’re his dad, Marc, and he’ll be calling me ‘Uncle Griss’. Fantastic. As if this day could get any better.” Grissom ranted again, shoving his hands in his pockets and turning away from Katie Jo. He loved her, but when she did brainless things like this, he sometimes questioned why he proposed to her three years ago.
“Cut her some slack, will ya?” Marcus finally chimed in, trying to spare the young woman more humiliation. “She did all of this because she cares about you, you know. Besides, Marsha and I’ve been trying to have a baby for a long time, so this will give her some practice.”
“But-!” Grissom began to argue, only to be silenced by his best friend.
“Stop embarrassing her, Griss. She’s already been through enough hell just trying to get to you, so at least show some appreciation for her efforts.”
Though he didn’t want to give up this fight that he was winning, Grissom saw the hurting look on his wife’s face and surrendered for now. “All right, I’ll admit you were strong to get this far and you were smart to bring the protection of others, but you took a huge risk in letting your life be put on the line like this. As soon as this fight’s over, I’m taking you to the nearest port so that you can go home.”
“Don’t bother trying to send me away – I’m staying.” Katie Jo interrupted, smiling again, thus making her husband become angry once more.
“And what reason could you possibly have for staying?”
“I’ve become one of you. I did the ceremony myself.” Katie Jo then showed her husband the thin scar down her arm where she had to cut into the night of her inner light’s freedom. But when he saw it, he didn’t react as a husband would to his wife in pain, and instead grabbed her by the wrist and gritted his teeth frustratingly.
“You… you… you’re so STUPID! KATE! Why the hell did you do that?! Now you’re permanently stuck with this gift you were never supposed to have! It will be nothing except a curse!”
Katie Jo’s lip began to tremble now, her husband’s temper the one thing in life she feared the most. “I… I just wanted to help you. I thought that if I became the fighter you were, we could finally connect on something more important. I mean, look,” She then pointed to the tattoo on her shoulder, grey curled lines forming the shape of a cloud as she concluded, “The spirits said I was several shades lighter than you and now I can use storms to my advantage.”
“But you’re afraid of storms…” Grissom pointed out dryly.
“I know that, but this is helping me get over it. I’ve already used it in several fights, haven’t I, Julie?”
The one-armed girl nodded, but wasn’t as eager to join the argument as her friend anticipated. “She’s done well for a beginner. It’s obvious she’s never had any training or instruction beforehand.”
Grissom sighed after looking at the battle-worn form of Julie, in a moment admiring her courage and resolve she had in entering this war just to find her father. Unlike Katie Jo, her heart was not only in the right place, but so was her mind. She had a perfectly good reason to be there, but Katie Jo lacked the clarity to understand the consequences of her actions. Julie had already paid a price and was coping with it far better than most men would.
“Mark my words, Kate, you may have been tough enough to get to this point, but like it or not, I’m shipping you home eventually, and I’d rather not send you away in a box.” Grissom advised his wife, who was becoming relaxed again now that he was steadily calming down.
Katie Jo shrunk a little and looked to her comrades. Julie sighed and turned her attention elsewhere while Francis and Sterling stifled their giggles. Leann was neither disgusted nor entranced in the moment and walked up to the couple, her presence demanding and even dark.
“Enough of this bickering.” Leann barked like a general to her troops. “We have other missions to do and we won’t be accomplishing them sitting around a fire talking. We still have a few hours of light left, so let’s get moving.”
“Take it easy, Grandma. Some of us have been in some pretty intense fights earlier in the day, so we’d like to rest.” Marcus tried to coax the older lady into letting them call it a night, but her glare was unwavering and sharp, piercing his skull and mesmerizing his brain. “On second thought, I’m not tired at all.”
