Summary: "Don't you leave the room now!"
Amanda stared hard at her. "Don't you leave the room now!"
Miranda stopped in her track, her hand raised in mid hair to reach the door handle. She had rarely heard her friend speaking so harshly to anyone. She tightened her jaws in the hope that it would help her remain resolute. She couldn't speak, couldn't explain to Amanda why she was so unreadable lately and where she disappeared to so often.
Her hand dropped slowly to the door handle in an almost mechanic move. She felt the cold metal against the palm of her hand. The round shape reminded her of her own rock. What if she were to use it now and vanish in front of Amanda's eyes? No, she couldn't because then she would have to explain what had happened and she couldn't do that. Amanda would think her crazy.
"Miranda!"
She heard the heels of her friend shoes hitting the wooden floor hard and before she could turn the handle, she felt Amanda's hand gripping her shoulder and spinning her around. Miranda dropped her eyes to the ground.
"You will look at me now and you will explain." She wasn't screaming any longer but Miranda wished she was. She dreaded this cold calm tone of voice. It was like a clean sharpe iron blade piercing through her.
She forced her gaze up, pleading with her eyes for Amanda to let her go but it was too late. She had gone too far. Amanda wouldn't stop until she got an explanation.
Miranda forced her mouth open. "I can't stay that's all," she whispered the words forcing her eyes to convey all she wanted to say. "I'm sorry it came to this. I'm sorry Steven got killed because of me. I'm sorry I acted as if it was all a game. I'm sorry you'll never know what happened."
"Where are you going?" Amanda's voice was slightly softer but not enough to make Miranda crack. She harden her gaze and took a deep breath as she tighten her jaw. "Away," she replied through gritted teeth. Before Amanda could do anything she had wriggle free of her hand and was out of the room. As soon as she reached the steps she grabbed her rock and vanished away.
She landed in her room above Jake's office. She blinked rapidly a few times, trying to engrave in her memories her escape from Amanda. She didn't want to remember but she needed to make sure she wouldn't forget. The game was over. She couldn't pretend anymore and play with her pearl. She unclenched her jaw and tears started to fall.
The door opened slowly to reveal Pearl. "I thought I heard some..." Her voice broke off as she saw Miranda standing in the middle of the room. She reached her in two quick steps and enlaced her in her arms before Miranda could do or say anything.
"What happened," she asked softly.
"Life...," breathed out Miranda as an answer before gripping Pearl's shirt in her fists as if the other woman was her only anchor left in that instant.
