Wrong
Samantha was busy doing math configurations about the power system while her other team members were asleep, Jacob at the helm of the ship to keep them on a correct course. He found it amusing by how she often got distracted from sleep by math and school subjects – it was something she tended to do as a kid, too.
But something was wrong – he was watching her too much.
Admiring her, even.
“Dad, you okay?” She asked him, having noticed his awkward stare.
He smiled simply and directed his vision back out to the nose of the craft, trying to ignore what he was feeling through his exemplary senses. “I’m fine. Shouldn’t you be sleeping?”
She shook her head, far too interested in her equations to care about sleeping now. “Nah, this power source is way too cool to not study. I wish the Tok’ra would let us borrow one for analysis.”
“Selmak may be able to pull a few strings.” Jacob offered, grinning in an effort to stave off pending curiosity.
“Really? That’d be great! Thanks!” Samantha replied, overly enthused by the suggestion, her smile reflecting in the window as she returned to her arithmetic.
Jacob’s heart skipped when he saw her reflection, and it was scaring him what he was feeling. Why was this feeling there? Why was he fighting the urge to go to her and… No, it wasn’t right. It wasn’t him.
“Selmak,” he called out to his soul mate within their joined mind. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“It’s complicated, Jacob…” Selmak replied, rather sheepishly, as if concealing an unspeakable, damnable truth.
Odd – Selmak never acted shy. “Come on, if I can understand astrophysics and God-knows-what-else, I can understand one of your complicated emotions. What is it? Why am I feeling so awkward around Sam all of the sudden?”
“I… cannot say, my friend. It would disturb you beyond imagining, and it would scar your daughter forever.”
Jacob paused, trying to subdue the anger swelling within him, and with great restraint, he replied, “You can’t be serious…”
There was utter and complete silence, and Jacob felt his heart sink with disbelief, rage, and bitterness. Why him? Why had his chance at living again suddenly become so complicated that he wasn’t sure if it was worth living?
“Sam,” he spoke, voice breaking under the extreme amount of tension, “Go get some sleep.”
“But Dad, I’m fine-“
“Do as I say.”
Though she was perplexed by his sudden change of attitude, especially when he generally encouraged her to study and concentrate on her work, she complied and put up her notes, walking to the back of the tel’tak to turn in with the rest of her team. Jacob then sighed, a little more comfortable now that she was out of the immediate room, but he still felt miserable. If this was something he was going to have to deal with for a very long time, he didn’t know if he could stand the pressure.
