Summary: The other woman’s smile made her feel suddenly very real, as if nothing else existed, as if Christina had been a distant memory of a past that didn’t quite existed anymore.

Helena closed her laptop and pushed it further down the table. She stretched her body in her chair before falling back against the wood of the chair. She had started to work before the sun was down and it was now pitch black in the room. She had barely noticed the transition. She looked around her, taking in her surroundings once more. She was in the B&B living room. It was strange to recognise the now familiar furniture. While working she had forgotten about her present life, about the reality of the 21st century.

She rubbed her eyes in an aimless effort to shake off sleep. She didn’t want to fall asleep now, not while she felt as if she was in flux between her past and present. In spite of the appearances she gave, she found it hard to adjust to this new time. Nothing was as she had hoped it to be and this made it too easy to fall back into past thoughts and plans. She felt safe when she was working of them, advancing them.

She got up and went to the window, staring out in the garden. She wasn’t sure any longer that she wanted to go through with her plans. There were hours she could see improvements in the world, there were hours she could feel the excitement of a new life to be discovered and shaped. Those were only hours and days could go by without any bright spot about the world. It needed to be destroyed, human beings needed a fresh start.

“You can’t sleep either?”

Myka’s voice startled her for a second but before she had finished her turn to face the other woman she had regained her composure.

“I like this house in the quiet of the night.” She didn’t want to reply to the question. She didn’t want to explain why she couldn’t sleep.

“Me too,” said Myka. A few seconds later she was by Helena’s side, staring out in the garden.

“Why couldn’t you sleep,” asked Helena wanting to hear Myka’s voice.

“A nightmare,” the other woman replied softly.

Helena understood and didn’t inquire any longer.

“I used to read to Christina to chase away the lingering images of nightmare.” As she finished her sentence she realised it wasn’t what she had meant to say. The words had come out as if of their own accord and it hadn’t hurt.

She turned her head and smiled at Myka. The other woman’s smile made her feel suddenly very real, as if nothing else existed, as if Christina had been a distant memory of a past that didn’t quite existed anymore.

“Would you read to me,” asked Myka tentatively.

“Pick a book.”

Helena watched her walked to the library, trying to make sense of what she was feeling. A moment ago she had felt torn apart between her past, present and future but in that very moment she felt grounded. She felt like she belonged in this century, she felt there was hope still and a place for her. She shook her head. She didn’t want to think about the implications of this change, not now. She didn’t want to be reminded of her plans. In that instant they didn’t exist, not as she was fixed in the 21st century.
