Summary: “Do you remember when we were young,” a rasp chuckle escaped from him. They were in their mid-twenties and already he felt old. “I mean when we were kids."

The rain had stopped but it was still unbearably dark outside. The sky was covered with dark clouds, stopping the stars and the moon from shining over the earth. High above ground level, Thomas couldn’t enjoy the comfort of street lamps. He knew he could have turned on the lights of the room when he came in an hour earlier but he had been scared it could have wakened her up. The doctors had said she needed as much rest as she could get. For the last hour she had been sound asleep, her body still and her face relaxed, the nightmares not haunting her for once.

He turned away from the window, slowly walking to the chair beside the bed. The newly found silence in the room was becoming unbearable. If left him alone with his thoughts and that almost scared him more than the idea of loosing her.

“Do you remember,” he coughed, unable to finish the sentence. He took a deep breath and swallowed heavily. His throat still felt dry, as if all of the water of his body had escaped in his tears.

“Do you remember,” he forced himself to start again, his voice coarse and hurting him. “Do you remember when we were young,” a rasp chuckle escaped from him. They were in their mid-twenties and already he felt old. “I mean when we were kids. When we use to play hide and seek for endless hours.” His lips twitched into a small smile at the memory he wanted bring back. “There was this one time when I found you behind the huge oak tree but you didn’t want to give in so easily. You started to run as fast as you could. But I was faster and gained on you easily. You turned your head to see how close I was, and in that second you lost track of your surroundings and your body ran too close to the edge of the cliff. Do you remember how I leaped and caught you just in time, just before your body could fall?” He paused. “Do you remember?”

He lifted a hand to her hair and started to gently caress them. “I remember.” He leaned closer to her. “I told you not to be scared when I saw the fear in your eyes. I told you I would always be there. I would always catch you. Always catch you…” The last words escaped in a whisper.

He tried to remain upright but he couldn’t. His body collapse on the bed near her. He took her in his arms and held her tight, not caring that his gesture could wake her up. He needed to feel her close to him, to sense her warmth against his, to feel the faint beat of her heart.

“You can’t go away,” he whispered into her hair. “I’ll catch you. I’ll save you.”

“You can’t go” he repeated between gritted teeth, unable to shed any more tears.<\lj-cut>
