Summary: Jeroen watched Claire in the kitchen.

Jeroen lifted his head from the Sunday paper he was reading. The news of the mortal world was quite boring in comparison to what was going on in the immortal world. It wasn’t boredom that had made him stop reading. He actually rather enjoyed that aspect of the mortal world. It was normal and comforting. It could almost make him believe for a few seconds that everything was as it should be. What had made him raise his head was Claire going about the kitchen with cleaning products in hand. He could barely see her figure from his chair in the living room but the spark of lively colour was all he needed to know Claire was busy. He could see the red and yellow of her dress come and go in front of the door and her soft voice humming the latest popular songs. She was happy, he thought, happy and ignorant. He lay his the papers aside and walked to the kitchen door, leaning against its frame. Claire had her back to him, busy as she was cleaning the cooker. He smiled. Even when her legs should have been still, she couldn’t help but move them in a slow dance rhythm that was in time with her humming. I love you, he wanted to say to her in that instant but he didn’t dare break the spectacle that was offered to him. He loved her energy. It was as if she could never stay still, not even when she was waiting in line or sitting in the sofa on a cold winter evening. A part of her always had to be in movement. It might just be what he loved most about her, he thought. She was life and vibrancy incarnated. It was the opposite to what he had known for the past centuries. The immortals possessed a sort of stillness he knew all too well. He liked it but he was beginning to be bored by it. He knew it inside out. He was a master at standing still and watching. Claire was not. Claire knew she could die any minute and was determined to make the most out of life, enjoying every seconds of it as if it were her last. He wished he could still have this ability, but it was impossible when you had been in your late twenties for as long as he had.

“The paper got boring again,” asked Claire teasingly.

“Huh,” was all Jeroen could reply. He had been lost in his mind for the last few minutes.

Claire laughed at him and Jeroen only smiled in response, his eyes riveted in the present. She walked slowly to him, her hips swaying to an imaginary melody. As she reached him, she stopped moving all together and kissed him passionately trapping him against her warm body. And in that moment, for those long long seconds, Jeroen was enjoying his life as if he would die the in next second.
