Summary: There are still things in this world that can surprise Dawn.

Dawn sat at the metal table and rubbed absent designs on the surface with her finger. She was doing her level best to not look at her reflection in the mirror. Blood was not a good look on her. Well, anyone really. So instead she studied the sturdy, blah furniture before her.

Waiting.

Which was really the hard part. There were people she needed to call and notify about what happened in the Navy Yard, but that wasn’t happening anytime soon. NCIS had pulled her in for questioning, practically dumped her in the room, and then promptly disappeared for what so far had been an hour.

She hated waiting.

While she completely understood their reasons behind bringing her in, her friend had just been murdered and all she wanted to do was go home to a stiff drink. Jenna’s parents didn’t even know yet. Unless NCIS was already making that call. But she would still need to follow up and give the family the true reason why their daughter was no longer with them.

Once she figured out the reason.

Truth was, she wasn’t entirely certain of what had happened. Jenna had called her while tracking what she had thought was a demon that had been responsible for several disappearances in the area. Only, there had been a scream come through the phone before she lost the connection. By the time she had arrived at location Jenna had given her, all that was left of her friend was lying in a pool of blood. Dawn had tried desperately to save her.

She had failed.

Some Watcher she turned out to be. Eight months officially on the job and she lost her first slayer. She had lost friends over the years since Sunnydale, but she had sincerely thought that she would do better than this when she finally reached the field work. Buffy was gonna insist on her talking to someone about this.

Gee, what fun.

The door to the room opened and the grey haired man entered, she seemed to remember his name being Gibbs. He sent a pointed look to the camera in the corner and Dawn was surprised to see the red light on it blink out. A moment later she could just faintly hear the door to the observation room open and voices as she was literally left alone with the agent. He gently closed the door behind him and walked over to the table. Without a word he handed her a cup of coffee before seating himself in the chair across from her.

Surprisingly the coffee was rich and full of flavor.

Dawn had seen some impressive looks over the years, it was hard not to with the family she had. The slayer peering out of Buffy’s hazel eyes, Willow’s resolve look, various Big Bads’ as they tried to intimidate her, and the worst of all - the rare look of disappointment in her mother’s eyes. This man’s assessing gaze almost topped that one.

So they sat in silence and drank their coffee.

He was the one to finally break the silence. “It doesn’t look like a vampire attack. What was she tracking?”

Dawn looked at him in shock. Those were the last words she had ever expected to come out of his mouth. “Excuse me?”

“My people are good,” he said with a shrug. “My ME noted some injuries that he had encountered in a case overseas years ago, my team confirmed that you and the victim work for the NWC, although they have no idea what that entails. My only confusion in the matter is that you seem rather young to be a Watcher.”

Her mouth hung open. “You know?”

A small smile twisted his lips. “You don’t see as much of the world as I do without learning a thing or two. What help, if any, do you need from my team to catch this guy?”

“I’m not sure yet,” she said slowly, still not fully trusting the situation. “I have a few phone calls I need to make.”

He tossed over her cell phone. “Do what you need.”

Wow, this is amazing. I never really thought of NCIS and BtVS as compatible fandoms before, but you've made it work. My heart breaks for Dawn, losing a Slayer, especially when she's so young herself. Having Gibbs on her side and in the know can only be a good thing, though.
