Summary: “It’s a formal reception Ben. Formal,” repeated the frustrated man.

Francis looked at his watch for what he was sure was the fifty times in less than fifteen minutes. This must be a record, he thought. Ben was always late but this time her had topped everything. He had walked in the apartment nonchalantly ten minutes after they were supposed to have gone, and now he has been in his room for the last fifteen minutes. Francis had wanted to leave as soon as Ben stepped in but then he had realised than the other man had just spend his day helping out in his father’s garage and was stained with oil, grease and dust. Francis really couldn’t take Ben out like this, not to this special screening. There would be people he knew around, people dressed in smart suits. He sighed. Maybe he should have known better than to invite him. He had known before today that the man never arrived to an appointment on time and that he had no idea what a suit was.

Francis leaned against the wall behind him and rubbed his eyes hard. He really should have invited Tomas or anyone else really. Maybe he still had time to change his plus one? As the thought reached his mind, he heard Ben’s door open. Francis very slowly opened his eyes, scared of the sight awaiting him.

Ben was standing in the doorframe, his hair still wet from the shower.

“You can’t decently get out like that,” commended Francis.

Ben was wearing a well worn out pair of jeans and a faded t-shirt.

“What,” asked Ben as he looked down at his clothes. “They’re clean.”

Francis shook his head.

“It’s a formal reception Ben. Formal,” repeated the frustrated man at his friend.

“So?”

“Suit, smart jeans, shirt, polished shoes…,” listed Francis to help his friend what he should have been looking for in his wardrobe.

“I don’t have any of those and I don’t care. You shouldn’t have invited me if you wanted smart and educated.” Ben walked back into his room.

“Ben…”

Why did he have to open his stupid mouth? He had known all along that Ben didn’t own what people called smart clothes. He had known and he hadn’t minded, not really. He had been an idiot to expect otherwise, and anyway his friend would have looked ridiculous in a suit.

“Come out of that room. We’re gonna be late.”

“We’re already late!”

“So let’s not be even more late and miss all of the food.”

“You didn’t mention the food before,” he heard as the door was opening again.

“Come with me and you’ll find out,” grinned Francis.

Ben walked out of his room and followed Francis outside, grabbing his old full of stain jean jacket before slamming the door shut. Francis saw the gesture but kept his mouth shut, a grin forming on his lips instead. At least Ben would ensure that the evening would be entertaining if the screening was boring.
