Summary: Perhaps she had become too accustomed to Sunnydale and the lack of interference from the cops that she hadn’t thought about the consequences of an extended fight in an alley in a much larger city.

Buffy grunted as her stake was knocked out of her hand and clattered to the dirty alley floor. Her current opponent was actually proving to be a bit of a challenge for once and the oldest slayer found herself reveling in the ensuing fight. It had been a long time since she had encountered a vampire that was more than barely a fledgling.

She was so engrossed in the fight that she hadn’t heard anyone approach until it was too late.

“Freeze! Federal Agent!”

Both she and the vampire actually froze out of sheer amazement and turned as one to their interloper. Perhaps she had become too accustomed to Sunnydale and the lack of interference from the cops that she hadn’t thought about the consequences of an extended fight in an alley in a much larger city.

At the end of the alley, just a few feet away, is a sharply dressed man illuminated from behind by the lights on the busy street. His stance is confident and sure despite not being much taller than she as he points a gun at them.

For the longest moment it’s all Buffy can do but stare at him out of pure amazement. Logically she understands that he has no idea what he has actually walked into but she’s never been caught by well-intentioned cops before either. She’s not really sure how she’s going to explain this either when he gets to the questioning part because she sucks at the spur of the moment cover stories.

Buffy was spared from making a decision when the vampire leapt at the detective and knocked the gun away in a disdainful swipe of his arm. Then he grabbed the cop and threw him against the nearby brick wall.

She took advantage of his distraction and slid her secondary stake out from the back of her waistband. “Hey, ugly!” She called. He whipped around to face her and she quickly plunged the stake into his chest, turning to him dust. She hated dispatching them in front of civilians but she didn’t want to chance letting the situation get out of hand.

A throaty chuckle emanated from the ground and Buffy turned to see the cop smiling up at her through the shadows. A smaller gun was in his hand but he lowered it as he spoke in a rich, southern accent. “I should have known better than rescue such a lovely damsel who is now, quite obviously, not in distress.”

“Huh?”

“You must be a slayer,” he said, drawing out her title in his honey accent and causing shivers to spark across her spine. “Mind helping me up?”

She recovered herself enough to help him up off the ground. “How… what… huh?”

“Ezra Standish,” he said with a nod of his head. “Half Chamaeleo demon. Sorry, if I had known who you were I certainly would not have barged in like I did.”

“It’s okay,” she said slowly. “Half demon and a cop?”

“ATF agent and I usually do undercover work,” he said with a smirk.

She had heard of his type of demon. They were mostly harmless and tended to keep to themselves. Their special ability of blending in was more of a self-defense mechanism than a hunting one. She stared into his green eyes for a moment before finally relaxing. If she had to be caught slaying a vampire, at least she wasn’t going to be hauled off to jail for it. “Buffy Summers,” she said finally.

He let out a low whistle. “Such royalty in Denver. I must say, I never once thought I would be meeting you, my dear lady.”

Buffy felt a blush rise up on her cheeks and was grateful for the dim lighting. “Well, um, thank you? I was really just passing through.”

“So, you’re not staying long?” He asked, stepping closer.

“I might be persuaded differently,” she said, letting herself be taken in by his southern charm.
