Summary: "It's alright Gaheris. I'll get better. And I'll join you in Camelot.

The mist outside was still very low to the ground, the sun barely able to pierce through it in feeble rays of orange lights. Gawain was standing by the window of his chambers, watching the sun rise battle the dark.

"Get the horses ready Aggravain," he ordered softly.

His younger brother nodded and walked out of the room.

"Gaheris...," he started gently as he turned toward him. The young man was sitting on Gawain's bed, his head dropped low.

"Yes... I'm... I'm coming," he stumbled as he raised his head in a vain attempt to display certainty.

Gawain walked to him and squeezed his shoulder as he reached him. "Go and see him before we go. I'll get the bags to the stables."

Gaheris nodded. As Gawain exited the room, Gaheris stood up from the bed and walked out behind his brother. He went to the next room.

He opened the door gently and closed it without a sound.

"Gareth," he whispered. "Are you awake."

"I am," came the feeble voice of the youngest brother. "Is it time already? It still looks dark outside."

"The sun is rising. Gawain said we need to go before the castle wakes up properly."

"It's alright Gaheris. I'll get better. And I'll join you in Camelot." He paused. "I promise."

Gaheris could hear the smile in his voice. "You better," he replied as he rushed to the bed. He hugged his brother tight. "I'll save you a seat at the Round Table."

"Not if Gawain and Aggravain leave without you," Gareth teased. "Now go."

Gaheris kissed his brother's cheek and ran out of the room. Gareth closed his eyes and fell back asleep. He dreamed of knights in shining amour and damsels to rescue, of perilous quest and glorious welcoming. One day, he would join his brothers in their adventures. One day.

---*---

It was two years before Gareth got better, and six months before he was able to escape from the grip of his mother to ride to Camelot.

No one recognised him when he arrived at Camelot. Hs hair had grown below his shoulders and a beard was covering the lower part of his face. His stature had changed too. He had regained his strength and had built a stature that presented him as a man now.

He carefully avoided his brothers for fear that they would distinguish glimpses of the boy he had been. He wanted to prove his worth before joining the ranks of the Round Table. He knew the renown of his brothers and wanted to show that he was just as good. He didn't want to be accepted because he was a nephew of the king.

So when he ended up in the kitchen he hadn't minded. It was even perfect. He would get good food, lived close to his brother, to the other knights, to the king. He would have access to the training ground and one day, a quest would come to him. One day.
