Summary: Time for Brarin to star a new life

"It's time, Brarin", his father whispered. The young man met his ancestor's eyes. He looked old, so old, but Brarin knew he wasn't as older as he looked. A life spent trying to make a living for himself and his family had aged him prematuraly. The assignment Brarin received three days ago had quickened the process.

The young man sighed deeply, gathering courage. He wasn't the first one to leave. His two older brothers had already been assigned to a new colony several years ago. His sister had been married to a colon last year, too. It wasn't the fact he was leaving that was so hard on his parents ; it was the fact he was the last one to. He didn't had any younger sibling left to take care of his aging parents. Now they were alone.

His mother was in the kitchen, trying to block her tears by make herself busy. Brarin was afraid to tell her goodbye, but he couldn't leave without a last glance at his mother's face, a last word heard from her. There was so little time left.

Before he knew it, his father had dropped him to the spacioport of the colony. There were gathered the young men and women who, like him, were about to leave their home to settle in a wild new colony, somewhere else in the galaxy. The human expansion was going so fast that the amount of volunteers to occupy the new planets terraformed wasn't enough to make every installation work. The government had decided that it was every citizen's duty to help to build the human empire. And now, every son and daugther of the colons could be called to live on one of this planets anytime soon. That's why his brothers had left. That's why Brarin was there now.

He looked curiously at the girls gathered in the spacioport. Maybe one of them had been the one chosen to become his wife. Or maybe she would come from another world. Love had been declared unproductive, and marriage was now a matter of concordance. The government only was able to find someone a suitable partner. From what he had seen, it had worked for his parents. He hoped it would for him too.

Soon enough, the ship that was going to carry him to his new home arrived, and he took the place he was assigned. Next to him, another young man looked longingly to the planet as they were leaving. During the trip, Brarin would learn that he didn't want to leave the planet, that he had tried to espace the assignment twice already, but that he had been caught and left with no other choice than settle on one of the wildest planet the government had conquered. It would take time, but the man would admit he did it all for a girl, the most beautiful one for him. He hadn't given up about finding her again, and run away as far as they could go, in some lost colony, where the government had withdrawn. Brarin wasn't sure they actually exist, but he didn't say a word. He should have reported the young man to the authority, for his speech as high treason, but he didn't. Somehow he understood that the system wasn't made for everyone.

Everything happened like in a dream until Brarin reached the house that was to be his new home. It felt empty, a lot more than when Randi had married some departing colons and had let him alone with their parents. That's when Brarin realised his former life was behind him, that he was all alone on a foreign planet. He would have broken down if it hadn't been for the female voice that had raised from the doorstep at that moment/

"This place is lame", she said, pulling a face. She was small, redhaired and freckled. She was looking at him with an annoyed raised eyebrow. "So, I guess you're the husband. It could have been worse."
