Title: In times of war
Prompt #374 Before the War
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 557
She was scared, of course. Only a fool woudn't.
They were all scared, some only better at faking peace of mind.
Olivia tried to stay calm as possible, and returned her focus on the bullets she was loading. A simple task, industrial and repetitive, one of the few things she could do before the war began. She filled the tiny tubes in the tray in front of her with the mix of gunpowder and mistletoe Wilma had dosed out earlier, and labelled the tray carefully for the ammo head to know what they were, and whom to give them. Then she took another one. The mechanic task helped her keep control over herself. It was better than waiting for the battle to come, useless till they reached the battlefield. Elementals' powers were only useful when in front of the ennemy.
Pamela had gathered them earlier, Olivia, James and his girlfriend Riley, to talk with them about the role they were going to play tomorrow, when they would break peace for good. James had been confident, as always, and had asked intelligent questions, made interesting remarks. Olivia and Riley had mostly listened, willing to do their best without knowing anything about the fine art of war. They had looked like some lame girl clichés, and Olivia had hated it. She had been used to be that independant girl, the one who could changed a tire and needed no man to fix her leaking sink, but all of this had been in the other world, the one where she didn't had any peculiar capacity, the one where she wasn't in danger to die every day. She hadn't thought about learning the good way to go to war, back then. She was regretting it every second, now.
When Pamela had been sure the three of them knew what to do on the next day, she had let them enjoy the rest of the day the way they wanted to. James and Riley had retreated to their quarter, doubtlessly to enjoy some intimate time while the dorm was empty. Olivia had seeked a way to make herself useful, waiting for the moment she would be able to blow their ennemy away with her control over the air.
She casted a glance at Ava, who was sitting on the other side of the table, also busy with bullet-filling. The woman looked up and smiled at her. As it had become usual over the last few days, Olivia felt warmth taking over her body from the simple smile of the brunette. She still hadn't decided what she wanted to do with all that warmth, all those feeling that had been gahering inside her since Ava had joined their group. Now was not different ; they were a sense of urgence in the air, a possibility that one of them wouldn't be there anymore tomorrow night, but Olivia didn't want to loose hope, not yet. She wanted, needed, to belive they were going to make it, that tomorrow wouldn't be the end of what they had, but rather the beginning of something new.
And so Olivia simply smiled back, and went back to work. She would wait for calmer time to act, she would take everything slowly, having them strong and lasting. She wanted to believe they had all the time in the world.
