Summary: Kay and Arthur reminiscence.
Sort of linked to that story.

Kay walked to Arthur and sat down next to him by the fireplace, placing two steaming cups of coffee before them. They had spent a hard day harvesting potatoes and were now relaxing after a hearty dinner by the light of the fireplace.

"Do you remember the time before the war?"

Arthur snorted.

"What time? We were never really at peace, were we?"

Kay smiled as his hand enclosed his cup, his skin almost burning at the contact. "It's not true Arthur."

"Maybe not, but peace was never real. Even when we thought we had vanquished the Saxons, every knights had petty fights between each other and Lancelot..." His voice broke at the name that was bringing uncomfortable memories back to his mind.

"I don't mean that time Arthur. I mean well before all the wars and responsibilities."

Arthur turned his head to face his old friend. "We were already pieces being manipulated into a game of war at that time."

"No we weren't. You could have said no to Merlin. I could have refused to follow you."

Arthur just stared at Kay, obviously not believing a word of what he was saying.

"I've been thinking about it a lot lately. We could have had this life the first time around. You and me, wives, children, fields and a place to call home."

"I don't see the wives and children," teased Arthur.

Kay shrugged. "Well... it's a bit late for that now. But back then," he paused. "Back then, we could have."

"No." Arthur raised a hand to stop his friend from protesting. "We couldn't have had that kind of life. We were too thristy for power and battle. We couldn't think of anything else you and me. We were foolish thinking that wars would be fun and be rewarding. It's only now that we know how pointless and useless it had all been that we can be content in a simple life."

Kay remained silent, processing the words of his former king. "I guess...," he finally murmured as a took his first sip of coffee.

Arthur didn't add anything. He bent to take his cup of coffee and fixed his gaze on the flames dancing in front of him.

"We were happy though, I'll give you that," said Arthur after long minutes of silent.

"When?"

"When we were young and didn't know war." He faced his friend once more, but this time he was smiling. "It was a good time. We were carefree, hopeful and almost innocent."

Kay laughed at the last comment. "Yeah, almost innocent. Do you remember that time we chased the twins of the next village?"

"Oh yes. I don't think I could ever forget their faces when they fell into our bear trap."

Both Arthur and Kay laughed as pictures came back to them and memories of happier time started to come back to them, filling the room with smiles and laughter, making them forget what had happaned next, when war had come for the first time.
