Summary: Anna gets back home very late and start working on a project of her own.
It was three o'clock in the morning and Anna had just got home. It had been a very long day at the office. She was exhausted. Se had been used to those long hours in New York here in France it was different. She had forgotten how long those early morning hours could be. She yawned and sat at the kitchen table. All of her limbs were begging her to go to bed. They needed rest, but she ignored them. She didn't want to go to the bedroom. Agathe had always been a light sleeper and she knew that if she climbed in bed Agathe would wake up. Once she was awake she couldn't get back to sleep.
She went to the coffee machine and made an espresso. She swallowed it in one gulp and went to her office on the house. She lay in the sofa for a minute and closed her eyes, waiting for the caffeine to kick in. The jolt of energy came before she could fall asleep and in a few minutes she was at her desk.
She got the red folder out of the bottom drawer and placed it on her desk, waiting for her computer to boot up. She opened the folder slowly and read through her previous notes. She hadn't gotten very far. Every time she thought she was getting close to Erin she found out she had been wrong. But she wasn't ready to give up. She owed that much to Liander.
Her computer was ready. She went to work and forgot the time.
---*---
The first rays of sunlight forced their ways through the gap in her curtains. She looked away from her desk for the first time in hours. As she raised her head she saw Agathe leaning against the door frame, a steaming cup of coffee in each hand.
"Want one?"
"More like need one," commented Anna. She got to her feet and grabbed the coffee, taking a large gulp and almost burning herself in the process.
"You've been up all night?"
"I might have been, yes."
"You could have gone to bed you know."
"I didn't want to wake up up."
Agathe smiled and kissed Anna's forehead. "You didn't to worry about me." I would have read and eventually found back asleep.
Anna just stared at her in reply. They both knew it was false.
"Anyway..." started Anna before Agathe could say anything else. "I had work to do."
"At night? You stay at the office for night work when needed," pointed Agathe.
"I know. I meant another kind of work." Anna walked back to her desk and picked the red folder. She handed it to Agathe. "This work."
Anna took the folder and opened it.
"I'm trying to find Erin," said Anna before Agathe could really read any line of the first page.
Agathe looked up.
"That's the least I can do for Liander. He found you and... he called me when he did." Tears were starting to well up in Anna's eyes.
Agathe hugged Anna. She knew how difficult still it was for Anna to talk about her past in this life. She owed so much to Liander. They both did.
"Let me help you," whispered Agathe.
Anna nodded, confident that Agathe would feel her gesture against her neck.
"We'll find her," replied Anna confidently.
