Summary: Gaheris accidently kills his mother and starts losing the use of his mind.

Gaheris sword arm swerved to the side under the unexpected force of the blow. He felt the blade striking through soft skin. In the same instant he heard his mother's voice cry out in a loud moan. He dropped his sword as if it had suddenly caught fire and fell to his knees staring at Lamorak.

The blond knight stood frozen for a second, his eyes darting to and fro from Morgause's body that had collapsed on the floor and the frozen Gaheris.

"I...," he tried to speak but no words came out. Instead he jerked away from the door and ran as fast as he could away from the room, from the islands.

"My son...," groaned Morgause.

"Mother," whispered Gaheris in a question not daring to look in her direction. Maybe he had just brushed her with his sword, maybe it was just a small cut and she was fine, maybe, maybe...

"Come near me," pleaded Morgause.

Gaheris fell tears running down his cheeks. He slowly turned his head toward his mother. He opened his mouth to speak but no words came out.

Morgause extended a hand to him. Gaheris crawled to grab it and broke into sob. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Mother... I..."

"Shhh.... my boy... It's fine."

She dragged her body closer to Gaheris, spreading blood all over the floor. "It's fine," she repeated softly. She pressed Gaheris' head against her breast and buried his tears on her skin.

Gaheris couldn't speak, could barely breathe but it didn't matter in that instant.

"I'm free," he heard before he felt his mother tightening her embrace one last time before her limbs fell limply on the floor. Gaheris took hold of her back and pressed her hard against him while a scream escaped from his guts, only to be buried in between Morgause's breasts.

Gawain rushed through the castle door and ran straight for Morgause's chambers. The iron smell of fresh blood hit him as he reached the last corridor. He stopped in his track, a knot forming in his stomach. He took a slow step forward and started to walk to his mother's bedroom. As he reached the door, he pushed the wood slowly, hesitantly. The smell of blood was stronger here. There was no possibility of denying it. He closed his eyes as the door swinged open. When he opened them again he saw the naked body of his mother being held limply in Gaheris' arms. His brothers head was buried against his mother's chest. Gawain felt the urge to vomit but controlled himself. He took an hesitant step forward.

"Gaheris," he asked in a whisper. He was afraid to speak too loudly. "It's Gawain. Are you… Is she…" He couldn't finish his sentence.

As he knelt down next to the two bodies, Gaheris lifted his head. "I… I killed… her." His eyes were bloodshot from tears, his face distorted by pain.

Gawain gently took his brother hands away from the body of Morgause, unclasping them from her skin. "It's alright…" he murmured soothingly. "It's alright."

As Gaheris became free of Morgause, Gawain stepped over his mother body, glancing briefly at the gap in her side from which blood was starting to thickened. He took Gaheris in his arms and rocked him backward and forward, caressing his hair tenderly. "It's alright brother. It wasn't your fault." He didn't know what had happened but he was certain of this. Gaheris could not have killed their mother. He closed his eyes and kissed Gaheris hair.

When he felt Gaheris body completely still against him, all traces of shaking and sobbing over, he gently pulled him apart from him. "Let's go to our room. You can rest there and I'll take care of everything. Ok?"

Gaheris nodded and let himself be led away from Morgause chambers.

Gawain almost carried him to their old room and laid him down in his bed. He closed his eyes almost immediately and curled up into a foetal position.

He walked back to Morgause chambers. He stood in the entrance, taking in the bloody scene before him and clenched his jaws. He hoped Aggravaine and Mordred had killed Lamorak.
