Summary: She had climbed all this way to clear her head and rearrange her memories.
The wind had died down and only the sun remained. Agathe sat down in the middle of the clearing and closed her eyes. She had walked for hours in the forest, battling the branches of the trees and trying to follow the barely visible path. She was tired and wanted to collapse but she knew she had to make her way back soon. This was just a break for the sun to warm her skin and heat and bathe her tired muscle in heat.
She had climbed all this way to clear her head and rearrange her memories. She had only started to remember less than a month ago and she was still regularly hit with a whirlwind of years gone by. She was thankful for Anna to be so patient with her and not rushing her to remember, but at times she felt like a she was being a burden. She would cry in the middle of her work remembering Anna's death after the long agony of the Spanish flu. She would collapse on the floor feeling a bullet running through her stomach. Only Anna was still very much alove and there were never any blood suddenly erupting from her body.
She opened her eyes, afraid she would be sucked in the pasts if she didn't find a way to ground herself in this present. The entire valley spread below her. There were small villages sprawled here and there and not much else of sign of life. She could make out a car rolling by in a distant road. She followed it with her gaze as far as she could. It was the only sign that proved she was in the 21st century and not some time else.
She stood up and started to walk back the way she came from. She was scared here. She had thought the mountains would help ground her but they didn't. Their noises were timeless. She walked as fast as she could, trying to reach the 21st century once more.
A few hours later she stood breathless in front of her home. She remained still for a long minute trying to catch her breath. She knocked. Anna opened the door. She didn't say a word. Instead she took Agathe's hand in hers and led her into the kitchen. She sat her down on one of the chairs and started to make her tea.
Agathe was grateful that she hadn't chosen coffee.
"Drink this," Anna said gently as she placed a large mug of steaming tea in front of Agathe.
"Thank you," she heard herself reply in a coarse voice.
Anna knelt beside her and laced her arm behind her.
"It's going to be alright Agathe," she whispered. "I promise."
Agathe took a sip of her tea and placed the mug back on the table. She looked down at Anna and smiled. She was right, of course she was, thought Agathe. She had been silly to walk away from her. It wasn't peace and quiet she needed to help her memories fall back into place, let her live in the present. It was Anna and her ridiculous American accent, it was Anna and her soft hands from office work, it was Anna and her obsession with tea. It was Anna she needed. This new Anna she knew so intrically well and yet not at all.
"Yes, it's going to be alright," Agathe repeated slowly, gently squeezing Anna's hand in hers.
