Summary: Agathe ran her hand along the boat. The gentleness of the wood felt like wool under her hand.

Agathe ran her hand along the boat. The gentleness of the wood felt like wool under her hand. She closed and eyes and sat down in the shadow of the boat. In a few hours they would all be gone from this land and could start a new life. She leaned against the wood, trying to be reassured by the sturdiness of the material. She knew the crossing wouldn't be easy but it was all they had if they wanted to survive.

"So this is it?"

She opened her eyes. Anna was standing in front of her, her face glowing from the rays of the sun.

"Yes it is," Agathe replied slowly. She moved to the side. Anna responded to the open invitation and sat down next to her.

"Are we really doing this?"

"You know we don't have a choice."

"I guess not." She laid her head on Agathe's shoulder and closed her eyes. Agathe took her hand and kissed her gently. "It'll be alright you know."

"Yeah," Anna whispered in a low breath.

"Even if it's not," Agathe started jovially but her voice broke as she went on, "we'll get another chance next time." The sentence died in her throat.

Anna remained silent. She knew Agathe was right. Dying was never quite the end for them but it still hurt. They were humans still and it was hard to give up on life. They would have killed themselves and ended the threats of this life but they had decided against it. They needed their time with each other and could not, would not, give it up for anything - not even the promise of a better life next time.

"You're early." Erin's voice broke the silence that had settled between them.

"Better early than late," Agathe commented as she stood up, her voice not quite as light as she would have liked.

Erin nodded in acknowledgment. "Liander is on its way. We'll be able to depart soon. You have everything you need?"

Agathe pointed to a bag she had dropped inside the boat hours ago.

"Good," Erin commented. "Let's finish this boat before Liander arrives."

"Finish the boat?" Anna's voice quivered as she tried to hide the panic in it.

"I only mean painting eyes on it."

"Eyes?"

"To ward off evil."

Erin leaned into the boat and carried out two small boxes. She opened them and revealed dark earthly colours waiting to be smeared on the wood. She dipped her fingers in one of them and pressed her fingertips against the woods, slowly tracing the contours of an eye. The other women watched her silently. As she finished the contours of the eyes she turned to them and gave them the boxes. "You paint the inside."

"Erin," Anna started, "it's not going to work."

"You can't know that," Erin replied gently. "After all we shouldn't exist."

Anna remained silent and dipped her fingers into the paint. Erin had a point. Agathe soon followed and soon both women were smearing the inside of the eyes with paint.

Agathe closed her eyes for an instant, the smooth feeling of the boat still surprising her. She gently followed its vein, painting an all seeing eye on the gentle surface. For an instant as she took a step back to observe her work, she thought she saw the eye blink as if the boat was thanking her for giving it sight. She smiled at it unexpectedly. "We'll be safe now," she commented as she handed back the paint box to Erin.

"Yeah, we will be," Erin confirmed as all three of them stood back and observed the boat now seeming to be rising to life.
