Summary: She opened her eyes and her gaze fell on the coffee table. There was a dent on the side of it that hadn't been made out of use.

Outside, the world had turned dark, illuminated only by the pale light of the moon. Anna sat on her own in the sofa, a steaming cup of coffee in her hand looking at the breeze moving the leaves of the tree in their wake. She closed her eyes for an instant, breathing deeply. It still felt like a dream, especially at times like this when she was on her own in the house and the world stood still. It was hard to believe that the feeling in the pit of her stomach was raw happiness and contentment. She had never thought she could reach this state in this life. She opened her eyes and her gaze fell on the coffee table. There was a dent on the side of it that hadn't been made out of use.

"Agathe," screamed Anna to get the attention of the other woman who was busy painting a new wardrobe on the other side of the garden.

"What," yelled Agathe in reply barely shifting her focus from her work.

"I think I messed up," replied Anna sheepishly. This comment made Agathe turn her head to Anna. She was sitting on the floor, her head bent down over the coffee table. In a minute Agathe was by her side.

"There," Anna pointed at the side of the table. "I kind of made a dent in the table." Agathe laughed at the remark.

"You're not mad at me?" Anna raised her head, her eyes full of astonishment as she met Agathe's smiling face.

"Of course not." She slid her hand across the dent. "It doesn't matter if it's not perfect. I'm not a wood worker and you most definitely aren't either. We are going to make mistake and it's fine."

"But it's not perfect."

"I never said I wanted it to be."

Anna opened her mouth to reply but she realised that Agathe had never told her she wanted a perfect home. Anna had simply built the image of it in her head and had consequently felt guilty at the fault she had made.

"If I had wanted perfect, I would have gone to a professional, and I wouldn't have picked up old pieces of furniture to bring back to life. I want furniture with life and history. And you have just created a little bit more history to this coffee table."

"So I can make a mess of everything then," Anna joked. "And that'll be fine."

"Maybe not of everything," Agathe replied as she tackled Anna to the ground and started to tickle her. "But every now and again, you can," she finished out of breath.

Anna looked at the dark spot of the dent in the table. She bent down slowly and ran her fingers across it. Agathe had been right, the imperfect furniture that lived in their home was much better than something perfect and smooth. They had brought their home alive with memories in every corner of the home.
