The door of Jack's office shot wide opened. Pearl jumped in surprise as it slammed against the wall, dropping the wet towel she was using to clean the blood from her face. Jack, sitting behind his desk, barely raised his head from his notes.

"What in hell did you think you were doing," Miranda yelled as she stormed into the room. "She could have been killed!"

"Good evening to you too Miranda. Can I offer you anything to drink," Jack replied calmly.

"No you can't! But you can answer my question," Miranda replied her fists slamming on top of Jack's desk.

"I asked to be sent," Pearl said timidly before Jack could reply.

Miranda turned her head to the sofa and remained silent for an instant, unable to speak at the sight of the other woman's face still covered in blood and dirt, her hair disheveled and her clothes torn.

"And I deemed her fully capable of the mission," Jack added as he got up from his chair. He walked to the sofa, picked up the wet towel and handed it back to Pearl. "I was right. She completed the mission successfully."

"But at what cost," Miranda asked through tightly closed teeth barely able to contain the flow of emotions rising in her. She wanted to slap Jack and hug Pearl protectively but could do neither.

"She's still alive and well. It's only a bit of blood and a lot of dirt."

"Only a bit of blood," Miranda exclaimed unable to calm down.

"Miranda..." Pearl started unsure of what she wanted to say. "Please..."

"She's fine," Jack added. "Now if you could leave us alone. We have a report to finish." He gestured to the door.

Miranda opened her mouth to protest but the pleading look on Pearl's face stopped her uttering any words. Instead she hurried outside, slamming the door of the office as she exited.

Pearl knocked on the door and waited for an answer but none came. She opened the door slowly and looked inside. Miranda was sitting on the window ledge.

"Can I come in," she asked gently.

Miranda nodded.

Pearl's walked in and went to sit next to her friend. Her face was now cleaned of all blood and dirt, her hair brushed back to normal covering most of the wound that had caused her blood to spill. She looked out of the window to the car speeding by in the distance below.

"I'm not the ignorant girl from the woods anymore."

"Pearl...," Miranda started but Pearl ignore her interjection.

"I can take care of myself. I don't need protection," she added as she turned her gaze to her friend.

"I know..." Miranda whispered. "I just..." She paused unable to continue her sentence. "I'm sorry I yelled," she finished not finding the right words to tell Pearl all the incomprehensible emotions that had risen in her at the sight of so much blood on her face.

"It's okay." Pearl took Miranda's hand in hers. "I'm safe."

"Yes." Miranda agreed a small smile rising on her lips. "You are."
