A lightning bolt cracked in the sky, illuminating the rain battered city for an instant.

“One, two, three,” Pearl muttered under her breath. She closed her eyes as the shattering sound of thunder reached her ears. “The dead are close,” she whispered.

“What,” Miranda asked barely raising her head from her book.

Another ray of lightning shone quickly followed by the rumbling noise of thunder. Pearl lay her hand agains the window in a vain attempt to keep it from trembling. “The dead are close,” she repeated, her voice breaking on the last word.

“What do you mean,” Miranda inquired. “The dead are dead,” she commented. Her curiosity picked, she closed her book, leaving one of her fingers between the covers to mark her page.

“Where I come from, there is…” Pearl paused trying to find the right word. “A legend,” she tried and stopped immediatly unsatisfied with the word. She gazed outside expectantly but the city remained dark and only the drumming rain could be heard. “That is…” she continued slowly. “Where I come from,” she started again. “There is a… belief. When lightning strike it opens the gate between the world. There is nothing separating the dead from the living.” She turned her head towards Miranda, her eyes full of fear. “If the dead realise this, they can sip into our world and…” Her throat dried and she found herself unable to continue. “…and take possession of a living soul,” she finished forcing the words out.

“But it’s just a legend.” Miranda looked quizzically at her friend. She had never heard her mention any belief before. She could hardly conceive that the girl she knew could truly think a natural phenomena could hold such mystical power.

Thunder boomed once more. Pearl jumped at the unexpected violence of the sound, letting out a small cry. “We would gather together in the house and wait dreading the worst. If any dead should come our way, should find grandma…” She closed her eyes as her voice trailed off, her mind flooded with memories. She laced her arms around herself trying hard not to shake but she could still vividly remember the bodies of her family huddled against her, trembling.

Miranda kept looking at her in disbelief, unable to reconcile this fragile and superstitious vision of Pearl with the girl she knew but as tears starting to flow down Pearl’s cheeks she forgot what her friend was saying. The book dropped from her hand as she stood up the bed and went to embrace Pearl. “It’s alright,” she whispered in her friend’s ear. “I’m here.”

Pearl gripped Miranda’s back and pressed her hard against her body, needing to know her body was still warm, her heart pumping blood to her veins, life flowing into her. She nestled her head in Miranda’s neck, her mouth pressed against the beating of her artery, muffling a whimper as a final splinter of thunder echoed in her mind.
