"You have twenty-four hours Miss Sirvel," the Professor said before closing the door, the Regency disappearing from sight.

The metallic clang of the sophisticated lock resonated throughout the bare room. Edith listen to it slowly dissolve into silence before moving to the simple wooden desk that stood in the middle of the room. She sat on the chair and lay a hand on the large pile of folders that adorned the surface of the desk. Her gaze was still fixed on the door. She knew no one was standing behind it. The Regency had gone the moment the door had locked her in. She dropped her gaze to the folders. There lay her future. The Regency was trusting her with their most secret information and her reaction to it could make her join their rank or make her join the rank of the dead. She didn't want to become a member of the Regency, there was something not quite right about their attitude. They were too close to each other and she sometimes wondered if they too were more than mere immortals. She pushed the thought aside, it wasn't what mattered. They were her way to the top and it was only important for her to know how to manipulate them as she knew it would be her quickest and surest way to succeed. She opened the first folder, a smile on her face as she started to read.

Hours later she was lying on the bed, folders neatly piled away around the wooden desk. Her eyes were wide open, fixed on the white paint of the ceiling. It was like a canvas for her thoughts. She had never expected the Regency to be so cunning and daring. Their research had taken them almost a century but it was now bearing its fruits and she could see how twisted they had become. She had been right in thinking they were not simple immortals any longer. The history books never hinted at what they had become. They had always seemed innocent idealists but a life too long had turned them into more than that. She smirked. No one knew about this but her. They had given her access to their most secrets of projects. They had shown her all their cards and she was now in control as they naively thought they knew her and could assimilate her in their rank. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to rest. She would have plenty of time later on to think of a plan of action.

The door opened in a fracas of metallic noise. Edith rose from the bed to face the full Regency.

"Miss Sirvel," the Orator asked.

Edith extended her hand. "I'm in." She said calmly, looking at their five stern faces.

A smile appeared on their faces, their eyes glowing with optimism and pride. They each extended their hands to shake hers. She gladly obliged, feeling she was sealing a pact for their downfall as she did so.
