Mathilde looked at the kitchen around her, scanning her environment one last time. Lina was about to come back from university and she wanted everything ready before then. The flours, eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla pod, bowls, spoon, scale and whisker were laid out in front of her. She rolled up her sleeve. She was ready. She turned to look at the clock. 5.43pm. Lina would be home any minute now. She watched the clock ticks the second away, feeling time passing in an agonizingly slow fashion until finally she heard a key turn into the lock. She slid her fingers through her hair shaping them into place nervously. This needed to be perfect.
She heard the door open and shut, Lina dropping her keys into the ceramic bowl in the entrance. She could see her kick her kneel and take her shoes off before placing them neatly into the line of shoes against the wall. She would then hang her coat behind the door and moved into her room to drop her bag there. It would be the moment she needed to call her to her. She closed her eyes and listened carefully to every small sound. There was the shuffle of fabric against the wood of the door. She opened her eyes.
"Lina," she rolled the name against her tongue taking her time on each syllable and stretching them as much as possible. "Come to the kitchen."
She heard the steps coming towards her. She smiled as she saw her friend enter the room, her bag still hanging in her hands.
"I told you I would teach you to cook," Mathilde exclaimed as she swiped her hands over the island.
"Mathilde..." Lina started in protest.
"No, no, no. We have guests tomorrow and we're going to bake dessert together."
"But..."
"No but." Mathilde walked to her friend, took her bag and deposited it on the floor. She grabbed her shoulder and lead her gently to the other side of the island. "We have a cake to bake."
Lina sighed. "Okay. But if it's a disaster, it'll be all your fault."
Mathilde laughed. "Deal," she replied before going on to explain what she wanted to bake and how they were going to do it. She tasked Lina to measure the ingredients and start mixing them as she was tidying what they didn't need anymore. When she looked back at her friend she could see her frowning upon the mixing bowl, the whisker in her hand turning the batter gently. She glided silently behind her, leaned her body against her back and gently laid her hand against her. Lina jumped in surprise, throwing the whisker in the air. It fell on the floor in a splatter of batter, sending drops every which way.
Mathilde laughed in Lina's neck. "That wasn't quite how you're supposed to do it."
"But you..." Lina started to protest but before she could go on Mathilde had turned her around in her arms and was kissing her. "We can always bake the cake tomorrow. I still have plenty of all the ingredients."
"Good idea," Lina nodded absently before she kissed Mathilde in return, her hands sliding under her friend's jumper.
