Title: Chatting About Chakras
Fandom: BtVSPrompt: 423 - chakra
Rating: PG
Summary: Where magic comes from ...
Note: I'm working on an original fic set in a world with demons and seraphs, the descendants of angels. The ideas in this story sort of overlapped from that one.
Note: Written pretty much as a stream of consciousness
“So, where does magic come from?” Tara asked.
“What … what do you mean?” Willow turned to see Tara’s smirk, the one she wore when she was in what Willow thought of as teaching mode.
“Oh,” Xander slapped down the lid of a pizza box after tossing not two but three slices on his plate. “Is it like in Star Wars? Does it come from The Force? Does that mean there’s a dark side?”
Buffy snorted but didn’t comment, being too busy downing yet another slice. It wasn’t fair, Willow thought. Just because she was the Slayer, she could eat as much pizza as she wanted and not gain an ounce.
“No one knows the source of magic,” Giles replied. He’d already finished his usual three slices and had settled back with a cup of tea.
“That’s right,” Tara said “but it’s stored in chakras.”
Anya snorted but didn’t say anything.
“Chaka Kahn what?” Xander asked.
“I’m sure Chaka Kahn is a powerful woman, but I was talking about chakras.”
“They’re energy centers,” Giles added as he went into his own teaching mode. “The idea comes out of the Hindu yogic traditions and there does seem to be a strong correlation between chakras and magic but we don’t know what the connection is.”
“Yes we do,” Anya said.
“I beg your pardon.”
“We completely know what that connection is. It’s the angels.”
“Angels are real?” Buffy asked.
“Of course they are,” Anya replied. “Demons exist. Why wouldn’t angels?”
“It’s just that we’ve never seen angels, honey. I mean demons, sure, see ‘em, kill ‘em, but angels not so much.”
Anya stood. “Oh, so the only good demon is a dead demon, is that it?”
“No, no.” Xander jumped to his feet and put an arm around Anya. “Nobody’s saying that. Right guys? Not saying that?”
“No, no,” Willow said. “Not saying that at all.”
“Now come on, let’s just sit back down and finish dinner.”
“Well, okay,” Anya said, “but only because Giles already paid for it and I wouldn’t want the money to go to waste.”
“So.” Tara spoke up after Anya had rejoined them at the table. “What was that you were saying about angels?”
“Chakras storing magic. It comes from your angelic ancestors.”
Buffy spewed soda across the table. “Willow has an angel for an ancestor?”
“What, you don’t think I’m nice enough to have an angel in my family tree?”
“Do you remember Amy’s mom? No way was she related to any angel.”
“We all do,” Anya said matter of factly. “Humans are descended from angels.”
“Wait,” Xander said. “Angels, um, mated with humans?”
“There … there is that Bible verse about the daughters of men bearing the children of the sons of God,” Tara offered.
“Oh, don’t be silly,” Anya said. “There were no humans back then.”
“Okay,” Buffy said. “You’re either saying angels and demons or angels and animals and either way, ewww.”
Anya rolled her eyes. “I’m not saying there were orgasms involved. Angels don’t have genitalia. They modified or energized certain animals. Oh, I don’t know the details but angels came along and messed with animals and humans were the result.”
“And where did you get your information?” Giles asked.
“It’s a demon thing. We just know it.”
“Um, I’m still not following what this has to do with magic?” Willow asked.
“I don’t believe you people,” Anya said. “Chakras. Angels. Wheels.”
“I think I speak for all of us when I say … huh?”
“The word chakra derives for the Sanskrit word for wheel,” Giles said.
“And that helps us how?” Xander asked.
Anya snorted. “Oh, right, because you all think angels are cute cherubim with fluffy white wings.”
“Angels in the more ancient texts are depicted or described as wheels,” Giles explained.
“As in Ezekiel’s vision,” Tara said.
“Exactly.”
“Okay,” Buffy said, “Here’s what I’m not getting. If angels exist, then why don’t we see them? Sunnydale has plenty of demons. How come no angels?”
“Because those aren’t pure demons,” Anya said. “Remember the Mayor? Giant snake? The demons you fight are hybrids, part demon and part human.”
“But there used to be angels,” Buffy said.
“Well, yeah, but they left when the demons did.”
“Of course.” Giles slapped the table. “Er, um, I mean, that does make sense. There are certain powers that maintain a balance in the world.”
“So no more pure demons means no more angels?” Xander asked.
“Exactly,” Any replied.
“So if we hadn’t killed the mayor then an angel would have been allowed into the world?” Willow asked.
“Er,” Giles said. “I’m not exactly sure how that would have worked.”
“You wouldn’t want an angel anyway,” Anya added. “It’s not as if they’re cute and cuddly.”
“Huh?”
“I’m afraid she’s correct,” Giles said. “A medieval text refers to ‘the deadly good God’s angels do.’ The work of spirits at that level is not necessarily beneficial to mankind.”
“So they’re more like the guys in The Prophecy?”
“Oh no, Xander, angels are much worse than that.”
“Great, and now I’m never going to pray again.”
“Yeah,” Buffy said. “I think that’s a time to head home kind of a note.”
Xander dropped Willow and Tara off at Willow’s parent’s house. They were out of town and it was closer than the dorms. “Hey, what’s got you so melancholy?” Tara asked.
“It’s just what Anya was saying about chakras and angels and magic. I don’t like thinking that our magic comes from something that, well I guess I can’t call it bad but maybe scary?”
“But Buffy’s powers come from demons, right? I mean, that’s what you said once.”
“Well, yeah.”
“So, if she can do good with demon powers, why can’t we do good with angelic powers?”
“Oh.” Willow thought about that and then she grabbed Tara into a hug. “You’re right. It’s how we choose to use them that’s important.”
