Agathe lay curled inside Anna's embrace. She held on tight to her lover's arms hoping they could protect her from the world outside of this room. There was so much she wanted to say but words were useless. Anna knew everything and there was no point dwelling on their situation. The world had not been made for them. They had been lucky to find each other and should linger in those moments they could snatch away from their respective families. Agathe closed her eyes and for a minute imagined that this bed, this house belonged to them and that the distant noise of children playing were not her own but theirs sharing both of their blood and having been born from love rather than duty. She felt her eyes well up with tears but before they could fall she moved away from Anna.

'You should go,' she whispered without looking at the bed. She heard the shuffling of sheets on the bed and the cotton of Anna's dress sliding against her skin. When she knew the other woman was dressed, she raised her eyes to her. She wanted her to see she was sorry and didn't want her to go. Anna smiled at her, walked to her and gently kissed her forehead. 'Until I see you again,' she murmured in her ears, her warm breath leaving a trail of shivers on Agathe's skin. And then she was gone and Agathe was left alone.

'John, leave your sister alone!' Agathe shouted at the young boy.

'She's not my sister,' he replied angrily.

'In this house she is. And you will treat her as such, with respect.' She crouched to his level and stared at him for a long second. The young boy's grip on Mary's hair loosened and in a moment he let her go. Agathe inclined her head and stared harder at the little boy.

'I'm sorry Mary,' John mumbled.

'Good.' Agathe commented. 'Go finish your homework now.'

'But...' Agathe raised a finger and stopped the boy before he could continue with his complaint. 'I don't want to hear about it. Go finish your homework.'

The boy reluctantly walked away.

'Have I come at a bad time?' Agathe jumped to her feet as she heard the familiar voice behind her. She beamed at the newcomer. 'Not at all. You are just in time to rescue me Anna.'

Anna laughed. 'You should accept less children,' she teased. 'You'll have to open an orphanage soon.'

'You love them as much as I do,' Agathe commented. She kissed her lover's cheek before walking rapidly out of the room. 'They're all yours for the next hour. I need to make dinner.' She shouted from the corridor. She paused as she reached the kitchen and leaned against the wall, closing her eyes for an instant. She had wanted to do more than kiss Anna on the cheek but she knew she couldn't, not in front of the children. The world was still not ready for them but at least this time they had children of their own. None of them had their blood flowing in their veins but they were growing up surrounded by their love and for now it was enough.
