Jacob hated being a werewolf and didn't want to make peace with it, but he might be forced to put aside his bitterness over being cursed in order to help his college roommate Shane investigate a dangerous and unpredictable spirit that is haunting campus.

Previously: "I'm sorry you lost a friend," Jacob said.

Shane swallowed. "He was...a part of me," he whispered. "But it's not your fault."

Jacob reached out and almost touched the back of Shane's hand, but the memory of the hot vision they'd shared the day before stayed him at the last moment. He'd risked touching him enough for one night: he didn't want to do it again and see himself practically begging to be dominated. It scared the shit out of him. "Well, I don't pretend to understand what a guardian is, but he obviously meant a lot to you."

"Friends do," Shane said, pushing his hair back wearily.

Jacob shrugged. "I wouldn't know."
