Summary: "Hello, my name is Gawain," he said as he knelt to the floor to be at the same level as the little boy. He looked nervously behind him at Morgause. She nodded her head.

"Hello, my name is Gawain," he said as he knelt to the floor to be at the same level as the little boy. He looked nervously behind him at Morgause. She nodded her head. "I'm Mordred," the boy offered timidly. His eyes sere fixed on the feet twitching on the floor.

"Nice to meet you Mordred." The name sounded strange on his tongue, too close to his mother's name. "Would you like to be shown around?"

Again the boy looked at Morgause for approval. "Yes please."

Morgause placed her hand on the boy's shoulder, her fingers gripping his small frame as if he was her possession. "I shall leave you to it. Gawain will take care of everything. You're in safe hands with him." She was looking straight at her oldest son as she said the last sentence, her voice carrying the subtle hint of a threat. With an effort she pushed Mordred forward. The little boy stumbled and for an instant Gawain thought he was going to fall. He listened to the footsteps of his mother in the corridor. When the sound disappear he moved closer to the boy. He gently placed a hand on his shoulder, almost a caress after Morgause's grip.

"Shall we go to the kitchen first? There is sure to be some jam and bread we can nibble on," Gawain teased. The young boy lifted his head, a glint of envy in his eyes. Gawain smiled at him. "This way," he said as he raised to his feet. He held his hand open for Mordred to grab. The boy hesitated for an instant, stopping his hand in mid-air but seeing that Gawain kept his hand ready, he took it. Gawain squeezed the little hand in his.

They walked through the long corridors in silence. Gawain was finding it hard not to look at his new brother. He didn't know why his mother had taken him in. She already has four sons of her own and she had never seem to care much about them. Was it a new fancy she had taken? Who was this boy? He looked so strange with his ghostly skin and soot black hair. He looked like no other Gawain had ever met in the islands. He wanted to ask the boy where he was from, who his parents were and why Morgause had taken an interest in him but he held his tongue. In any case he thought the boy probably couldn't answer this last question, the one he really wanted an answer to.

"There we are," Gawain exclaimed as they reached the kitchen door. "Bread and jam to feast on." He held the door open. The little boy looked at him hesitantly. "Go on." Mordred walked in closely followed by Gawain. He exchanged a few words with the cook before setting at the table. He tapped the seat next to him and Mordred joined him and watched him closely as he spread the jam over the bread. Gawain handed it to him and the boy after a quick hesitation brought it to his mouth and devoured it hungrily. Gawain laughed. "Want another?" Mordred nodded the hint of a smile on his lips.
