Summary: Miranda listened carefully to the footsteps of Jack disappearing into the corridor.

Miranda listened carefully to the footsteps of Jack disappearing into the corridor. When she heard the creaks of the steps, she slid her hand off the cover and bent down to reach the light under the bed. She brought it on the bed and paused, listening hard for any noise around but all she could hear was the distant hums of cars in the street below. She sat up, keeping the blanket over her head to stop the light from slipping under the door. She reached under the pillow and made a fist around the warm round metal. She slowly dragged her hand out. She kept it close for an instant, feeling the motif against her skin. She unclenched her fingers one by one to reveal a small golden badge engraved with a tree in bloom. She traced every details with her eyes before following them with the tip of her fingers. She knew it by heart and yet she needed to see it to confirm it was real. It was the only trace of her parents had left after their deaths. She closed her fist again around it and brought it close to her heart. She closed her eyes and tighten her jaw. She would not cry, she was a big girl.

"What's this," Pearl asked as she held the golden badge between her fingers.

"Give it back," Miranda cried involuntarily.

"Okay..." Pearl handed it to her friend. "I didn't mean to..." she wasn't sure what she hadn't meant. She had simply been curious about the object. She had never seen it before and it looked incongruous in the young woman's room. It was old and not the sort of jewellery Miranda usually wore.

"I'm sorry," Miranda whispered as she closed her fingers around the badge. "I didn't..." she stumbled upon her words. "I'm sorry," she finally repeated unable to find anything else to say.

"It's alright." Pearl caressed her friend's fist slightly. "Is it something important?"

Miranda's hand loosened slowly until the badge was balancing on the tip of her fingers. She watched it danced for an instant before placing it on her bedside table. She sat on the bed, her eyes tracing the familiar contour of the tree. Pearl sat next to her and followed her gaze. It was strange to see a symbol of nature in the city. She hadn't seen anything to remind her of her home before this moment and she wondered why Miranda would hold such an object so dearly.

"It was my parent's," she finally answered. "That's all I have left of them."

She lowered her head for an instant before looking at Pearl. Her eyes were wet with tears ready to fall.

"It's beautiful," Pearl commented honestly. "Do you know why there is a tree on it," she asked trying to stir her friend away from the pain of loss that was rising up to the surface.

Miranda shrugged. "I don't know. I don't really know anything about my parents," she added. She lowered her head for an instant before rising to her feet. She grabbed the badge, opened the drawer of her bedside table, drop the badge in it and slammed it shut.

"Anyway... weren't we supposed to go shopping today?" Her voice was too eager but Pearl ignore it and agreed that they really ought to be on their way now.
