Ting The lift opened its door to reveal an empty room. Pearl peered nervously into it. "Are you sure we have to go in there?" She was nervous. She had known it would be small and without any windows but she hadn't expected it to be so restrictive. It was barely more than a box.
"Yes," Miranda answered calmly. "We are going to the 47th floor and that is too high to use the stairs."
Pearl could understand her point. That would be a lot of stairs and they didn't have all that long before their meeting. "I know but..." As she leaned closer to the doors, they snapped shut. She jerked backwards with a cry, bumping into Miranda. She felt the other woman's hands on her waist steadying her. She also heard the chuckle she fell to contain. She turned to face her. "It's not funny Andy!"
"Sorry. It's just..."
"I know," Pearl cut her off. "It's ridiculous" she added tired. She turned to face the lift again. She stared at the closed metal doors. "But I can't help it. It just... It feels wrong and I'm... I'm scared," she finished in a whisper.
"It's alright." Pearl felt her friend's hands on her waist once more. She felt the pressure of them swivelling her around. She dropped her gaze to the floor, her shoes suddenly the most interesting thing in the building.
"Look at me Pearl." Miranda's voice was soft and low. "Look at me," Pearl heard her repeat a little more forcefully when she didn't comply. She raised her head slowly and timidly meet her friend's eyes.
"It's okay to be afraid. You used to lived... out there," she added in a soft voice trying not to be heard. "And here it's all closed. And to be perfectly honest I never much liked lift either." Pearl smiled shyly at this last comment. She knew her friend was most likely lying but this was enough.
"Okay." She turned back and pressed the lift button.
Ting The doors opened again. Pearl reached for Miranda's hand and gripped it tight in hers. She felt Miranda pressed it affectionately. "Should we go join?"
Pearl nodded. They stepped into the box with no windows. Miranda pressed a button on the side and the door closed. Pearl's entire body stiffened. She tried to swallow but her mouth was dry.
The lift started its ascent with a jump. Pearl let out another involuntary cry and squeezed Miranda's hand. She forced herself not to shut her eyes. Instead she stared at the door, wiling them to open and let her out but they wouldn't. The ride was just going on and on. Her mouth was still impossibly dry but her hands were beginning to sweat and she was sure her face was white.
"We're almost there," she heard Miranda say in the distance, her voice sounding miles away. Pearl realised then that her friend had been talking throughout the ride. She turned her head to her and forced a smile on her lips.
Ting The doors opened and Pearl almost ran out of the lift. She leaned against the wall for a minute oblivious to the people around. She had made it to the 47th floor in this moving box, nothing else mattered.
