Summary: Sometimes Ned wonder if this whole investigating business is a blessing.

Sometimes Ned wonder if this whole investigating business is a blessing. Sure, he needed the money and he couldn't complain. Solving murders did bring money that allowed him to bake pies without worrying about customers coming in through the doors, but hunting murderers was a dangerous business and Ned didn't like all this excitement. He was putting his life at risk, his secret always on the brink of being revealed and his carefully secluded life shattered to pieces.

In spite of appearances Ned thought he had been happy. He could bake pie all day, remember his mother and bring happiness to people who wandered in to his shop. He even had Olive to bring life to the place and Digby to keep him company. He hadn't needed more.

Ned rolled on his side to look at the empty bed next to him. Chuck had gone to Olive's apartment that evening for a girls night. He supposes this whole investigating business is a blessing. It did bring Chuck back into his life. He gets up slowly and walk to Chuck's bed. He stares at it for an instant, hesitant to touch it. He knows it will not kill her if he touches things that belongs to her, things that held her at night and keep her warm. Things that are not him. He lets hit body fall slowly onto the cover and closes his eyes. He can smell Chuck's scent on the perfume - a strange mixture of fruit, flowers and cheese. It is intoxicating. He wraps his arms around his chest and thinks of her. It is painful to know her so close and yet so far untouchable.

He opens his eyes and look at the plastic wrap separating his bed from hers. What if there was an expiry date on his curse? Could it be that Chuck would not die if he touched her again? He gets up and walk to the corridor. He leans against the door frame leading into the living room. Digby is sleeping peacefully on the floor. Could he survive? For a second Ned is tempted but the second pass and he does not touch his dog. He cannot bear the thought of killing him.

He walks back to his bed and closes his eyes. He should be asleep. There is another day of baking pie and dead waking tomorrow.

---*---

The following morning the pie maker wakes feeling like he hasn't slept at all. Chuck is still untouchable and he is still sheltered by plastic wrap, living life in his own bubble. He slowly gets out of bed, showers and walks down to the Pie Hole. He suppresses a yawn and rubs his eyes as he enters the kitchen. He barely has time to put his apron on before he feels the familiar softness of gloves turn him around and a second later a thing film of plastic wrap is pressed hard against his face followed by Chuck's lips and it is as if they are kissing.

"I've missed you last night," she says as she loosen the plastic wrap and Ned can breathe again.

He smiles like a boy after his first kiss, too dazzled by the experience to be able to speak. Yes, this whole investigating business is a blessing.
