Summary: Gaheris stared at the ceiling from the top bed of the bunk bed.
Gaheris stared at the ceiling from the top bed of the bunk bed. Outside the lights were gone and only the stars and moon lit the garden. On the ceiling, he could discern the fainted glow stars, planets and moon that he had glued there with his brother almost ten years earlier. It had been a happy time then when they had not remembered their past yet.
"Do you ever wonder what our lives could have been if Mother hadn't hate Arthur?"
"Gaheris..." Gareth moaned. "It's 2 o'clock and I'm tired."
"But you're awake," he protested.
"And you're drunk."
"You too. But that's not the point. The point is... do you ever wonder how things could have been different?"
"No," Gareth replied sternly. "Now quiet and sleep."
"But..." Before he could continue with his sentence a pillow was thrown at him. He threw it back but remained quiet. He turned his gaze to the window and the outside world clouded in darkness. They could have had a normal life he thought. They could have lived on happily in the Orkney Islands. Gawain would have been king and they would all have helped out. No... he thought, they would have still be lured to the glory of Arthur's court. But then Mordred wouldn't have hated the King and the kingdom wouldn't have fallen... Maybe. He tried to think about it but it was difficult. His thoughts were slowed by alcohol and sleep and he had trouble following one to the end. Arthur would have to have been different... and Mordred.... and...

Gaheris blinked as he felt the harsh light of day on his eyelid. He grumbled and hid his head under his blanket. "Go away..." he mumbled under his breath.
"It's the sun Gaheris," he heard his younger brother reply. "Stop being childish and get up.
"No. We're on holidays... I'll stay in bed if I want to," he protested his voice muffled by the blanket.
"Fine. Suit yourself, but don't come complaining you've missed fried breakfast later."
Gaheris grumbled once more for effect before jumping off the bed. "Okay, okay..." He consented.
He ruffled his brother's hair and ran down the stairs. Agravaine, Gawain and Mordred were already seated around the table.
"You can't have all of the bread," Gawain reasoned as he tried to pry the basket away from him.
"Why not? You can just ask for another one for the rest of you. We've paid for it," Agravaine countered.
"He does have a point," Mordred laughed.
Gawain glared at him. "This is not helping."
"Well..." Mordred shrugged.
Gaheris smiled at the sight of them, suddenly remembering his thoughts from the previous night. Yes, they had had a pretty unusual life in the past but this time they were normal, boringly normal even.
He ran to the table to join his brothers and stole a bread from the basket.
"Hey! That's mine," Agravaine yelled.
"Too late," Gaheris replied as he stuffed the bread in his mouth. "All mine now," he added his mouth full.
Gawain shook his head in despair and Gaheris laughed. Normal felt really good.
