Summary: "It was inevitable Kay. I let it happened. All I can do now is die gracefully in battle."

The grass was wet against his trousers, cooling him down after the heat of the day. The shower just gone had refreshed more than his body. He felt as if his mind had been cleansed of all his worries.

"There you are," the familiar rough voice of Kay boomed behind him.

"There I am," Arthur echoed in a whisper.

Kay sat besides him. "Pretty," he commented as he noticed the burning sun fading in the horizon. The camp was illuminated in a warm orange glow, the contours of the tents fading under the light.

Arthur laughed at his brother. Kay hit him on the shoulder which only made Arthur laugh louder.
After a minute they fell into a comfortable silence that lived for a long time.

"How are you," Kay finally asked.

The moon had taken over the sky in company of the stars.

"I'm okay." Arthur turned his head to face his brother. He wanted him to see his smile. He truly was okay.

"Tomorrow..." Kay started uncertain. He couldn't understand how Arthur could be alright.

"It was inevitable Kay. I let it happened. All I can do now is die gracefully in battle."

"Don't say that," Kay protested loudly. His voice rang in the silence. Arthur remained silent, waiting for the night birds to sing again.

"It is true brother. I should have loved Mordred and not let my shame come between us."

"Mordred's..." Kay started but Arthur raised his hand to stop him. He still had the authority of a king.

"Mordred was poisoned and starved for love. I denied it to him." He paused, his eyes falling to the ground. "I let him start his faction. I could see what he was doing but I thought that leadership would set him right. I don't know what I was thinking. I just wanted him to be free. I didn't realise he had so much hate in him."

"I did."

Arthur chuckled and looked at his brother again. "Yeah, you did. I should have listened to you. But it's too late now to change the past. I'm going to die tomorrow," he reiterated. "And I need you to live," he added quickly before Kay could interject. "I need you to live and let Mordred, let my son live too if he makes it out of the battle. I own him that much."

"But the Kingdom! What we've built!"

"It won't be lost. I need you and the few faithful friends we have to chronicle what we did, what we achieve. Make us and our kingdom live on in words and songs."

Kay opened his mouth to argue but Arthur raised his hand once more. "Please Kay. Don't make me give you an order. I have made my peace with my mistakes and I need you to respect my choice."

Kay stared at him for a long time before nodding. "Okay."

Arthur smiled and after a while he said, "come on. Let's go back to camp and get some sleep. We'll need our strength for tomorrow."
