Summary: "I don't, I don't, I don't," he repeated, yelling the words louder each time.
"You've got rabies!" Little Max spat mockingly at Andy.
"No I don't," Andy protested vehemently. "I don't!"
"You've got rabies, you've got rabies, you've got rabies," Max began chanting at the top of his voice.
"No!" Andy lurched forward and tackled the other boy to the ground. "I don't, I don't, I don't," he repeated, yelling the words louder each time.
Max wriggled under him but Andy was too strong. He closed his fist, raised it in the hair and was about to punch Max, forcing him to shut up but Max was suddenly silent, looking afraid. Andy had never seen fear like this before. His fist unclenched. He sprang to his feet and ran away.
He ran until his breath caught in his throat and he had to stop. He fell against a wall and let his body hit the ground. He couldn't see where he was. His vision was blurred. He could only feel the blood pumping hard in his temple and his legs burning under his trouser. He didn't mind the pain, he wanted it to engulf him into oblivion.
"You alright kid." The voice seemed far away but Andy knew it wasn't the case. He could smell perfume too close to him.
"Yeah," he breathed out, his voice rasp.
"You don't look it. Why don't you come with me?"
"No..." he tried to protest but he felt arms lifting him up and the smell of the perfume grow stronger. He kicked with his legs but they had no strength left and all he managed was a small twitch. "Lemme go..." he whimpered.
"Not around here."
Andy closed his eyes, too weak to keep fighting and focused on the movements. It was almost like being rocked in a mother's arms he thought. There was the soft cushion of breast and the intoxicating perfume. A few moments later he was placed carefully on a mattress, tucked under blankets and fell asleep.
When he awoke, the world was dark. He tumbled out of bed and light turned on.
"Good evening."
He looked up and saw a woman leaning against the door frame.
"You fell asleep and you looked like you needed the rest," she explained.
"Who are you?" Andy asked suddenly defensive as the events of the day came rushing back at the front of his memory.
"Linda," the woman replied simply. "And you are?"
"I don't mean to be rude but I need to go."
"Well that is rude. I just offered you a roof for the evening and you don't even share your name."
"Andy." He stood up. "Can I go now?"
"Do you even know where you are?"
"I'll figure it out."
The woman laughed but the sound was drowned by the noise of a train rolling past the building making the windows tremble.
"I don't think you want to figure it out. Let me bring you back in a nice part of town."
Andy clenched his jaws. He didn't want to owe this woman anything but she was right. He didn't know where he was and needed help to get back home.
"Okay..." he finally agreed.
