After three weeks without any breakthrough, the marshall summonned his captains to assist to a meeting on what could be done to be over with the siege. Envoys had brought words about enemy troops wandering in the countryside east of their position, plundering and ravaging villages as they went. As important as the capture of the Prince of Elaephort was to win the war, it would mean very little if the men were coming back only to find their home burned down and their family dead. A kingdom without a people was of little worth.

Maps were scattered accross a wide table at the center of the tent. They represented the nearby region, some covering a broad amount of land, others zooming on specific areas of special interest. Various attempts had been made at monitoring the enemy's movements since the beginning of the siege, but spy reports were too few to have a rel idea of who was where, and with how many men. Yet Dera, Marshall of the Northern Army, was studying reported positions of a couple of phalanx when his surbordinates entered the room.

"Captains, we can't stay here any longer. The enemy is attacking villages though the Racyoll and the Ephul. If we haven't taken the city in the next three days, we will have to leave it be. We need ideas, and we need them now."

After a brief moment of silence, Huktel, son of Hafog, spoke up : "We don't have enough men to try and climb the walls. And their door is too well-guarded to be broken down."

Reba from the Dallaond continued with a list of the techniques they had already tried without success. Within a quarter of an hour, all captains had added a comment to their current situations. Plans were crafted that were quickly discarded, being impractical or requiring equipements they didn't have handy. After more than an hour of discussion, Huktel spoke again, with the only alternative they hadn't considered yet :

"Maybe we can blow up the curtain wall to the south-east side of the fortification."

Everyone around the table stopped to give it as much consideration as to the other plans. This time, though, nobody spoke against it, more because it was their very last possibility than because it was the most effective way to enter the city.

"The men will have to dig fast to be done in three days", said Jion, a stocky man from the mountains, "but it may work."

After a tad more discussing and plan making, it was agreed that the main part of the army was to dig a tunnel that reached under the curtain wall, and stock it up with every wood log they would be able to gather. The heat should make the stones break, and thus open an entryway in the city for the army. It was going to be hard, but it was their last hope to take the city and bring the Prince to their Chief.

"It will be so, then", Dera said, and the captains went to break the news to their soldiers.
