Prompt 457 Fugacious
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 635

Edisani liked walking through the city. The sidewalks were dirty, and cars made the air stink, but there was a sense of freedom in moving among people who didn't care about him. Sometimes, a child would point him to his mother, a human would throw him a hostile glance, but it was nothing compared to the continuous flow of whispered insults and openly hostile behavior he met in Pioga. Here, in his current shape, he was nearly inexistent, and it was fine by him.
He reached the end of the sidewalk, and sat down on his bottom to wait for the pedestrian signal to turn green. People were whispering around him, calling him well-trained, and he had to stop himself from smilling – he was a dog, he wasn't supposed to understand what humans were saying around him. He returned his attention instead on the street in front of him. He had spent the last few days mapping the city around Chas' shop, getting familiar with his surrounding, just in case. The portion on the other side of the road was his next target. He had already smelled the sweet aroma of a bakery from this side, and wondered if he would be able to get a little something. He was a dog, after all ; weren't they all supposed to be food lovers?
The light turned green and Ed got up on his legs. He crossed the road among the humans, carefully avoiding to be stepped on, and reached the other side without any trouble. This block was like the one he had just left, and probably the one after it. Cities tended to be predictable in their setting. He walked up the sidewalk to the next road to get a quick overview of the buildings, then turned left to circle the block. The sun was still high in the sky – he had time to make a thourough inspection after.
He was trotting on the sidewalk on the other side of the block when he felt it. It was a fugacious sensation, something he had already felt before, but wasn't able to pinpoint exactly. It lasted for a couple of seconds before vanishing, and Ed didn't have time to locate its origin. It was fey, he was sure of that, but as far as he knew, he wasn't near any safehouse or portal to Pioga. Was there a fairy sent in a mission nearby? If there was, it was bad news for Ed. The last thing he needed was to be found by a fairy on another business.
He'd rather not think about the possibility of a fairy looking specifically for him. If it was searching here, that his safehouse might be discovered soon. Filled with worry, Edisani walked back to the crosswalk, and waited for the light to go green. Now wasn't the time to explore the city. He needed to get back to Chas' as soon as possible, and make sure his shelter was safe.
He spent a week inside, waiting for something to happen. Something unpleasant.
Nothing came.
Chas had opened an eye for anything out of place around the shelter – at least more than usual – but he didn't catch anything suspicious. It could be a trick, of course, but after a week, he and Ed had agreed that the Dahran couldn't stay inside forever. He had to take a chance and go out at some point. It might as well be now.
And so Edisani hit the streets again, close to the shelter at first, than a bit further, until he resumed his exploration of the city. Nobody came for him. Whatever that sensation had been, it seemed it had nothing to do with him in particular.
