Prompt #459 Kokopelli
Note: Following the text I've posted for the previous prompt.

During its next round, Edisani felt another rush of fairy power, different from the previous one. He recognised it immediately. Kakpallies emitted distinct waves of energy, pretty subtle if you weren’t used to them. But for someone like Ed, who had worked among all kind of fairies, and observed them carefully, the faint change in his mood, going from wary to confident, was as telling as seeing the green creature standing in front of him.

This one was especially faint, and used without the usual masterfulness of those fairies. Ed had felt something like this before, when he had stumbled upon a wounded creature. It felt like an awkward and desperate cry for help.

The beagle-shaped fairy walked in the general direction of the power pulsation, and soon, his canine senses picked on a scent that didn’t belong to this side of the portal. For a second, he wondered if this wasn’t a trap ; maybe after the previous sensation he had, not far away from where he was now, they - whoever it might be - would try to appeal to a nobler side of himself. It wasn’t a stupid reflection, but the possibility of a fairy wounded somewhere in human territory, unable to reach a portal or a safe house, was stronger, and he resumed his walk, following the trail.

The power seemed to come from the other side of the street, from a garden enclosed by a green wall of shrubs. As soon as he had crossed the street, Ed followed the scent, which was getting stronger and stronger, until he reached a small indentation in the shrub. His canine eyesight took their sweet time to distinguish the fairy from the greenery, but, eventually, he was able to focus on the creature. It was wounded, like Ed was expecting, and looked pretty terrified by the shapeshifter’s form.

“Don’t be afraid”, Ed said in a very low voice, hoping no human was listening. The Kakpally exhaled another puff of emotional power, and its face turned accepting.

“I didn’t know shapeshifters were involved too”, it said weakly, trying to get up on its cricket-like legs. “I guess it was foolish of me to try and escape.”

Ed cocked his head. “Escape? Do you mean humans have captured you?” If so, the Elders had to be warned. It could sign his freedom away forever, but the safety of all fairies could be at stake.

The Kakpally fell back on its bottom, observing Edisani without answering. The shapeshifter felt the familiar sensation of someone scanning his emotions without any subtlety.

“You don’t know what I’m talking about”, the wounded fairy said carefully.

“Not a clue”, Ed replied.
The Kakpally shook its head slowly. “I can’t believe it.” It then resumed its attempt at getting up. Ed couldn’t help much, except by lending his nose to let the fairy lean on it. When it was finally up, the fairy added : “I haven’t been captured by humans. I have been captured by fairies. Something bad is going on, and I can’t stay here, or they will find me.”
