The Apprentice watches over the lad in his care with great, silent interest as the boy waits patiently for him to come to him. There is so much he has to teach him, and yet so little time to do it. He is feeling every bit of his age now and knows the end will not be long. He must reach Henry while he still can. He retrieves what he needs and goes to join the lad.

As he approaches him from behind, he again watches the magic shimmering in the boy's aura. He is going to be so powerful one day. He is full of magic, and although some would say that it was dark and light magic, the Apprentice knows better. Magic, like anything else in this world except for those who live in it, is neither good or evil. It is all in the way that it is used that dictates its outcome and even how steep its price. There are those like Rumplestiltskin, who he knows already is the boy's grandfather and who has never learned not to try to bend magic to his will, and then there are those like Emma, who, although still struggling to learn her "own" magic will never willingly use it for foul means.

He's curious to know how the boy will handle his magic when his time comes. He used to think he was a good judge of character, but that was before the Author before the child. The pen chose Isaac, but the Apprentice has always felt a certain responsibility for all the wickedness that particular Author has visited upon the world. After all, if he had never called upon him, if he had never given Isaac a chance, he never could have weilded such magic.

And now it is the boy's time. He talks to the lad, giving him just enough information for him to make his decision, and watches to see what he will do. He begins to smile just a split second before Henry breaks the pen. The child is wise far beyond his years as he declares that no one, not even he, should have such magic.

The Apprentice wonders if he will change his mind when he learns what is about to come, but he knows, too, that he will not get the chance to further influence the child. A part of him wants to plead with him to always remember this decision, but he knows he can not. Still, looking into the lad's eyes, the Apprentice knows he will make the right decisions. He will never wield magic simply for what it can give him. He will bring his mother back when she is lost to them, but it will not be done through dark magic.

Right before the boy is to leave his care, the Apprentice reaches out to him. His old hand clasps his young shoulder, and Henry looks up in surprise, almost warily, almost as though he could somehow guess terrible things that will make him question his decision are about to come. The Apprentice smiles down into his eyes that shine with knowledge and power that the lad is not quite yet ready to grasp. "Well done, Henry," he tells him approvingly. "Well done."

The boy beams up at him, but then he hears Regina calling him and rushes away from the Apprentice and back to his family where he belongs. The Apprentice smiles as he watches him go, confident and no longer scared about what is soon to transpire. He will be gone, but the boy will remember his lessons. Although their time together is brief, the Apprentice knows already that that special boy, a product of powerful Good and Evil, is certainly his greatest student yet. He has taught great minds of all kinds but no one like Henry, no one so quick to do what is right regardless of the circumstances.

The Apprentice smiles, but there is a sadness in his eyes as he retires for he will not get to see the child grow. He will not get to see him become the righteous Author and powerful Sorcerer he will be. He knows, however, that he will do well for he is, after all, his magnum opus, the son of the Savior and the grandson of the Dark One, a product all around of True Love, and his rightful heir. "Good luck," he whispers. "I'll be watching," and he will, even though he will never be able to physically help him again.
