There’s not much about small-town life in Beacon Hills Derek missed while he was away in New York, and the debut of mature omegas that happens every spring is definitely one of the least of those things. It’s not something the bigger cities practice anymore; it’s an antiquated system that’s been phased out by society as omegas have started to take control of their own lives and announce their status on their own terms. But every March on the equinox, Beacon Hills—and thousands of small towns just like it—holds a ceremony to introduce all omegas recently of age to all eligible alphas.
As an alpha, Derek receives an invitation every year, but this is the first time he been back home since he turned eighteen himself. And as much as he’d like to decline, his sister is an omega and it’s customary for the family to attend. As in most traditional families, Cora’s been raised to be chaste and to obey her alpha. She’s never fraternized with anyone except family and other omegas and her studies were limited to a curriculum of literature and history and basic math and science, as well as classes on proper etiquette in the company of alphas. Derek’s always felt that omegas deserved equal rights to alphas and betas, and things are slowly changing—even in Beacon Hills. This year, omegas will be allowed to reject any offers of courtship made by interested alphas. The process could be better, but it’s not as bad as it used to be. Progress is progress, Derek figures.
So he’s preparing for the ceremony in his old room at his parents’ house—he’s been back from New York for almost two weeks and he still hasn’t found a place he likes—dressing in his best suit. He’s supposed to be presenting Cora, but his sister is stubborn and more revolutionary than many other omegas and has demanded to present herself. It’ll cause a stir in Beacon Hills, that’s for sure.
The ballroom at The Beacon Plaza—the nicest hotel in town—has been transformed into an ethereal dreamscape of soft and draping white chiffon and bouquets of lilies. Derek finds himself seated with his parents and older sister near the grand staircase the omegas are to descend at a table flanked by other families debuting their omega children. The row behind them are the most prominent alphas, the row behind them less prominent, and so on.
Derek looks around while they wait for the ceremony to start, and his eyes fall on the table beside his parents where Sheriff Stilinski sits with his wife Melissa and her son Scott, who is also an alpha. Derek learns that they’re here for John’s son when he’s announced near the end of the introductions, on the arm of a tall, beautiful beta girl in a dark green dress. He’s presented as “Stiles Stilinski, son of John and the late Claudia Stilinski… and Melissa Stilinski.” The girl presses a quick kiss to his cheek before leaving him at the foot of the staircase and moving to sit in the open chair beside Scott, who she kisses on the lips.
Stiles stands in front of the room, staring at some point on the back wall above the tables, as he waits for the next omega to be announced. He’s a vision in his sleeveless tunic, with large, bright eyes, and a cute, upturned nose, and a scattering of moles across one cheek and dotting the rest of his visible skin. Derek watches him go to stand with the rest of the assembled omegas as the next is announced. He’s never wanted to court an omega before, but he’s intrigued. His parents notice him watching and give him knowing looks.
Derek spends the rest of the introductions facing ahead, watching as the last few omegas are presented, ignoring his parents.
