Summary: Hermione prepares for her first day.

'They're dead,' I think.
I look in the mirror, running fingers through my bushy hair. It still doesn't lay smooth, but I like to pretend that I'm able to have some success.
'They're dead,' I mentally repeat in my head once again.
That's right, I killed the patriarchy. How, you ask? Bio-engineered assault turtles with acid breath.
Well, that's not exactly true. No turtles were involved and definitely no acid breath. I wonder if such a thing actually exists.
I shrug my shoulders before I begin applying some light makeup.
Although it was nothing as unique as turtles with acid breath, the patriarchy is dead and hopefully it's once and for all. Men should not rule the world. Two wizarding wars proved that. For the first time in decades, there is a female Minister of Magic. And that's not all. It's a Muggle-born female, something that has never been done.
After my lipstick is done, I lightly smack my lips. It's my first day at the office as the Minister, and I have to look perfect. Respectable and composed.
I should be happy. I worked hard to get the position. I know I can't rest on my laurels, though. The hard work is just beginning.
I twirl in front of the mirror, admiring the way the robes fit my body. When I got elected, Harry took me on a shopping spree, explaining, "The new Minster of Magic has to look her best." And of course, Harry being Harry, he wouldn't let me pay for anything.
He didn't like spending the money he inherited from his parents and godfather on himself, but he had no problem spending it on the people he cared about.
Soon after the war ended, I realized arguing with him about it was futile so I only put up a token effort when he wants to buy me something now. I know it's how he shows he cares, not that I ever doubted the depth of his feelings for me or his other friends in the first place.
I finish my twirl, and the mirror hums appreciatively. "You look beautiful, my dear."
I smile. I made sure my mirror was nicer than some of the other magical mirrors I've encountered since I entered the wizarding world, something I'm glad for today.
The last thing I need today is a magical object making me doubt myself.
I open my jewelry box and see my favorite necklace, one I think of as a good luck charm. It has a picture of a manatee on it. I wore it when I got my first kiss. I wore it when I first heard the words, 'I love you.' And I wore it when I heard that I won the election. I can't imagine my first day without it.
I put the chain around my neck and clasp it, the manatee resting just above the swell of my breasts.
I leave my bedroom and head to the fireplace. I grab a handful of Floo powder and take a fortifying breath.
I throw the powder in and in a clear voice, state, "Minster of Magic's Office. Pass code: 142."
The fire flashes green and I step into it.
It's time to go to work.
