Summary: Remus plays matchmaker.
Harry sighed. He hated being forced to stay at Grimmauld Place; now he understood how Sirius used to feel. At least Harry wasn't alone.
Right at that moment though, he would have preferred solitude. It would have been better than watching Tonks flirting with Remus and the werewolf pretending to be clueless.
Tonks was such a beautiful, vivacious woman. Harry knew he didn't stand a chance. Harry might be sixteen—the age of consent—but Remus was mature, could offer her things Harry probably couldn't.
There was no use wanting someone who didn't want him back. He should forget about her. In fact, he had more important things to think about. Like the war. When the war was finally over, he'd think about how pathetic his love life was.
~
Remus knew people saw him as oblivious in certain areas, but he did see some things. He saw Tonks's interest, and he saw Harry's interest. Unfortunately, the two interests didn't mesh properly. At least not on the surface.
When Tonks didn't flirt with Remus, she looked at Harry with keen intensity. For some reason, she decided to aim for someone many years older instead of just a few years younger. And personally, Remus thought Tonks and Harry made much more sense than Tonks and Remus.
As his honorary godson slumped in his seat and closed his eyes to the picture of Tonks and Remus, the werewolf decided to talk to Tonks alone, help her to see what was right in front of her.
He truly thought Harry would give Tonks things that Remus simply couldn't.
~
Tonks blushed when Remus followed her to the bodega. "Yes?" she asked, fluttering her eyelashes. She was never particularly a girly girl, but she would do anything to get Remus to notice her.
"Tonks, listen, I know you fancy yourself as having deep feelings for me."
"I do." Tonks eagerly nodded.
Remus smiled. "You're sweet and cute, brave and talented, but I'm not the person for you."
Tonks glared at him. "What's your argument going to be? Your age or the fact that you're a werewolf?"
"Although those are two things to consider, that's actually not my argument."
Tonks blinked at that. Remus wasn't going by the script she had in her head. "Then what is your argument," she asked cautiously.
He took a deep breath, fortifying himself. "There's something you don't know about my relationship with Sirius."
"Okay.... Are you going to tell me you weren't best friends?"
"We were best friends, but we were also lovers. Sirius was my mate. And although I have the chance to be with someone new because he's..." he swallowed, not able to finish the sentence. "Although I could fall for someone else, a werewolf is only given one true mate, and I would never be able to love you completely. And that isn't fair to you."
She stared at him with wide eyes. "I didn't know. How did you survive when he was in Azkaban?"
"I turned my sadness into anger because I thought he got James and Lily killed. It didn't make me feel better, but it made the loneliness bearable. Tonks, you deserve someone who could give you his whole heart, and no matter who I'm with, the person will always have to share me with a ghost."
"I understand," she muttered, and she did. She didn't like it, but she understood why Remus said no.
"There is someone in this very house that is very interested in you, though."
Tonks's eyes lit up. There was only one other person that had been a permanent fixture in the house besides the two of them. "Harry?"
Remus nodded. "I think you two match perfectly, and he wants you, but he's shy. He needs someone a little more aggressive, and you are just the one to be that for him."
She grinned. Although she did have feelings for Remus, she also had feelings for Harry. She had thought Remus would be less complicated because he was older, but maybe less complicated wasn't always better. "Thanks for the advice."
He nodded, and she left, happily skipping out of the door.
~
Harry headed towards the kitchen but soon ended up on the floor with a body—a very womanly body—on top of him. He blinked, staring into Tonks's dark green eyes. "Hi," he gasped.
Tonks smiled. "Hi," she breathed.
She stayed on top of him as her fingers touched his cheek and then his hair, carding through the unruly strands.
And suddenly, things didn't look so bleak. Maybe there was hope for him and Tonks after all.
