Harry held the baby in his arms. "It's okay, little one," he gently cooed, even though it felt as if his whole world was crashing down around him and a herd of alpaca was trampling on top of him.
"Daddy, when is Mummy going to wake up?" Five-year old James asked.
Harry swallowed as he tore his eyes away from Albus' beguiling gaze. It was the question he had been dreading since Albus was born.
While Ron and the other Weasleys left to grieve on their own, or yell and throw things in Ron's case, Hermione had stayed to keep an eye on the family of three, and she was the one who answered, "James, your Mummy isn't going to be waking up."
James tilted his head. "Why not?"
Harry pressed a light kiss to Albus' forehead. "Jamie, do you remember when I told you the story about the two people you were named after?"
James nodded. "Your daddy was James Potter and your godfather was Sirius Black."
Harry handed Albus over to Hermione who expertly held the new baby in a gentle embrace. "Right and do you remember what I said about where they were?"
James bit his bottom lip. "You said... You said they were in Heaven with all of the angels, and they were looking down on you, and me, and the rest of the family."
Harry took another deep breath. "That's right. Well, Mummy has gone to Heaven as well, and she's probably teaming up with my mum right now, and yelling at my dad and godfather for doing something childish."
"She's with the angels?" James asked quietly.
"Yes."
"And since she's with the angels, she won't be coming back, will she?"
Harry wanted to cry, but he knew he needed to be strong for his son. He grabbed James' hand and pulled him into a strong hug. "She can't come back. She's not allowed. I'm sure if she could come back to us, she would, but it looks like we're going to have to learn how to live without her."
That might have been too much honesty for such a young child, but it seemed the filter that stopped his mouth from working without any say from his brain was malfunctioning.
"Why did she leave?" James asked into Harry's shirt.
"She couldn't help it. Sometimes, bad things just happen to good people. And it's not fair."
He held James while the young boy cried his heart out. He felt his own tears come, but he kept them silent tears.
Harry rubbed James' back as he wished he could make all of the pain go away.
Ginny was one of the best people he knew. It wasn't fair that she died due to complications with Albus' birth. Harry had already lost so many people because of the war. Why did he have to lose his wife when the war was over? Why did his sons have to lose their mother? Why did his youngest son have to grow up without even knowing his mother? And would James even remember the vibrant and kind woman that Ginny was when he was older, or would the memories fade because of his young age?
Hadn't he suffered enough? Hadn't the Weasleys suffered enough? When would the pain stop?
