Characters: Giles, Spike, Dawn
Genre: humour, slight slash.
Summary: after Buffy’s leap Giles attempts to bring a smile back to Dawn’s face and ends up somewhere he never imagined.
“Just what the hell are we doing here again?” Spike said as he crouched down beside Giles.
“I don’t know what you are doing, but I am waiting in line,” Giles replied, “the early bird catches the worm and all that.”
“The early bird catches fucking pneumonia,” Spike replied.
“Firstly mind your language there are children around,” Giles said sternly, “and secondly you are a vampire and entirely incapable of catching pneumonia.” He lowered his voice to scold Spike.
“Well secondly,” Spike retaliated, “this isn’t early for me it’s late. Should be tucked up in bed away from the nasty sun and all.”
“I have already told you Spike I am more than capable of standing in a queue without your protection.” Giles resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Spike increasingly protective nature.
“Right you were fine with that bunch of demons chanting and threatening to cut ahead of you,” Spike snorted.
“They are children Spike not demons,” Giles tried his best to keep the grin off his face at Spike’s description of his other queue mates.
“Same thing.” Spike glared at the girl behind Giles who had kicked up such a stink at him smoking. The fact that he had put out the cigarette had no bearing on his mood at all.
“Anyway they’re not the only demons around,” Spike added to get back on topic, “a set up like this is a bloody all you can eat for vamps and demons.”
“All the more reason for me to be here,” Giles said. He was very aware of what Spike had been doing in the shadows to protect the foolish humans waiting with him, and knew that he had to be counted in their number even if he never admitted that to Spike.
“It’s nearly six; we should all be fine now.” Giles could hear children behind him beginning to wake up and he tensed in anticipation of the torture beginning again.
“I’ll wait a bit longer.” Spike’s gaze scanned the undergrowth around them as they talked. “If only to stop another invasion,” he glared again at the girl behind Giles, “and again, what the hell are we doing here?”
“We are doing this for Dawn remember?” Giles shifted in his deck chair to try and get some feeling back in his nether regions and flinched as down the line someone began the chant again.
Spike closed his eyes in pain and stood up, “You do realise someone will have to go with her and since you’re the only one with a car…” he smirked at the look of horror on Giles’ face. “You’re right you should be safe now. I’ll see you at the house later?”
Giles nodded dumbly and watched the blond slip away into the half light of dawn.
“Is he your boyfriend?” an annoying voice behind him asked.
“No!” Giles banished the thoughts of pale skin from his mind, “he is just a busy body who doesn’t know when to mind his own business. Like some others I could mention.”
The girl stuck her tongue out at him, but he ignored her choosing instead to finish the last of the tea he had brought in his thermos flask. When Dawn had heard the band was playing in Sunnydale they had seen the first signs of animation on the girl since they lost Buffy. Giles had decided then that he would do whatever it took to bring another smile to her face.
Hence a night spent at the head of a queue.
Spike’s words slowly sunk in and he was forced to accept the vampire was right. He had thought initially to get two tickets for Dawn and her friend Janice to go. However, if the queue had attracted so many predators, heavens know what the concert itself would bring.
They couldn’t risk Dawn or the other youngsters come to that. However, after a long night of bad renditions of the band’s songs Giles wasn’t sure if he could handle much more.
Of course misery loved company so if he was going to suffer then it was only fair…
So when the ticket office opened Rupert Giles ex-librarian, was the first to purchase four front row tickets for the ‘N Sync concert.
Epilogue
It was loud and thin like the drawn out scream of a dying Garog demon, and it went on and on. Behind it and above it was the pounding shuffle of thousands of feet counterpoint to the higher again pitched shriek of thousands of teenage girls worshipping in adoration at the feet of their idols.
Looking at Dawn’s face as she jumped up and down screaming with euphoria Giles knew the sacrifice was worth it. Seeing Spike standing there in music agony meant it wasn’t even that much of a sacrifice.
It had been the vampire objecting to Dawn’s choice of clothing rather Giles, and the vampire who had crumpled under the pressure of sad doe eyes. While Giles was gifted moderate approval for his jeans and leather jacket, and a sly grin at Spike’s expense.
Being surrounded by hundreds of screaming teenagers Giles decided it was better to be thought of as Spike’s boyfriend than some sort of creepy old man, and he hung on tight to the back of the ever present leather jacket when they squeezed through the crowd to patrol the shadows of the park.
However it seemed that ‘N Sync music was a better demon deterrent than a patrolling watcher and vampire. All they managed to do was surprise a number of amorous young people many of whom he recognised from study hall.
When Spike pinned him against a tree and proceeded to join in the activity Giles couldn’t find it in himself to object. After all he wasn’t a librarian any longer no matter what those children thought.
Here he was just a man with a disturbingly talented partner attempting to suck his brains out through his tongue. While not so cool flesh pressed up against him letting him know the desire was reciprocated.
