Summary: The morning after Dean comes back hurt from hunt, Sam and Sarah talk.

~*~*~

Sarah peeled the coverlet from over her head when the mattress dipped with Sam's weight. Reaching blindly, she wrapped her hand around the mug she knew he'd set on the nightstand. Bringing it close, she let the tea's gingery-sweet steam waft up, the fragrance starting to ease her stomach almost immediately. It hadn't been like this, last time with Mina the morning sickness wasn't nearly as bad. But Sam had already gotten lots of practice fixing Missouri's special ginger tea, the only thing that kept her from puking her guts out several times throughout the day. She took a few sips of tea, leaning back onto Sam with a sigh as he put his arms around her.

"Mina?"

"Fed, dressed, and watching something on Noggin. So we've got maybe… ten minutes before she thinks of something she absolutely has to have or to tell us about."

Starting to feel better, Sarah tilted her head so she could look up at Sam. "And what about Dean?"

"Sound asleep. Didn't even roll over when I glanced in there earlier. I'll send Mina in after awhile. That'll wake him up in a hurry."

"Be nice to your brother, Samuel… See how I did that?" Sarah asked, nudging her elbow into Sam's ribs. "I figured I need to practice my Mom voice before the baby comes. But seriously… let Dean sleep. The last thing he needs is Mina jumping on the bed and him when he's not expecting it."

"So you saw it too, huh?"

"What? The way he braced for impact whenever Mina came close, or when I went to give him a hug? Gimme a break. I think I've learned to recognize a wounded Winchester by this point. Even if you're a couple of stubborn idiots who try to hide how bad you're hurt."

"Hey! I don't-"

"Oh, yes you do. Just because you're not out hunting any more, and so not getting hurt as much, doesn't mean you're not just as bad as your brother. Remember last month, when you were packing up things for the Caviness estate auction, and dropped that crate on your foot? It was swollen into one giant bruise, and you wouldn't even let me take a look at it, let alone go see a doctor."

The angle was all wrong to see for herself, but Sarah was sure Sam rolled his eyes at that.

"It was just a bruise. Nothing was bleeding or broken. There was nothing a doctor could do for it I couldn't do just as well."

"Yeah, and Dean doesn't have part of a rib puncturing a lung, so he's not gonna say anything about the fact he can't comfortably stand up straight because he might have a couple of cracked ribs. Doesn't mean you should let your rambunctious four year old use him for a trampoline."

"It was a two-man job."

Sarah didn't let the apparent change in topics throw her. She'd been expecting it ever since Dean called three days before to say he might not be back their way quite as soon as he'd planned. She and Sam – and sometimes even Dean – had had this same discussion every time Dean got hurt on a hunt, and sometimes when he walked away unscathed.

Dean absolutely refused to let Sam go with him on jobs, and had ever since they found out Sarah was pregnant with Mina. No way he was going to change his mind now, and for the first time, Sarah was almost glad. She'd always said she was perfectly capable of raising Mina on her own, and had assumed she would. She knew what was out there, and someone – Sam and Dean kind of someones – needed to be out there fighting it. Yeah, she could raise the kids on her own if she had to, but if Dean had any say in the matter – and he insisted he did – she wouldn't have to.

So yeah, Sam would feel guilty for not being out there to watch Dean's back. And he would feel guilty for feeling like he should be anywhere other than with Sarah and Mina. And on very dark days, Sarah might even feel a little bit guilty Sam was at home instead of out there saving people from the monsters under the stairs. But they'd hide their guilt just like Dean hid his bumps and bruises, and they'd have a family and a home and two amazing kids who were sure their daddy hung the stars and the moon… with a little help from the bestest uncle in the whole wide world, of course.

Remembering what had started her train of thought in the first place, Sarah turned in Sam's arms and looked him right in the eyes to answer him. "Maybe. But he's home safe now, and that's what's important. We'll worry about the next job when it comes."

Maybe happily ever after only happens in fairy tales, but happy, healthy, and home for just a little while would have to be enough.

I identify with Sam more, because theirs is a similar relationship as mine is with my sister... She's the one in the forefront always, and I'm the one blending into the background... :D
