The Boy Next Door: Ancient Tongues
It felt like weeks since Spike had touched Xander. He knew it wasn't true. They cuddled almost every night in bed and Xander let the older boy kiss and trace the muscles in arms and chest but the younger boy seemed disconnected somehow, as if he were distancing himself from Spike.
The blond boy growled in frustration. He wanted, needed to break through Xander's barriers, to bring his precious boy back – if only he knew how.
He knew he was running late for Xander's tutoring session, not that the boy actually needed them any longer. He'd been doing well in all his classes without Spike's help for quite some time. But Spike wasn't willing to let their time together fall by the wayside. He enjoyed debating with Xander and hearing the other boy's ideas about everything from literature to history.
He pushed through the double doors of the library and stopped short at the sight before him. Xander and Giles sat at the table laughing and smiling as they recited an ancient language to each other.
"A bene placito," Giles prompted and Xander dutifully repeated the phrase.
"Ab imo pectore," was next followed by "Cor ad cor loquitur."
Xander was nearly beaming, but Spike saw red. He stormed further into the room before slamming his hand on the table hard. "What are you doing teaching him some arcane language when he has other things that he needs to be working on?"
Giles turned to glare at the angry blond but Xander was the first one to speak. "You have no idea what I need to be working on, do you? If you had, you would know that I'm working on a special project for Spanish."
"Spanish?" Spike asked incredulously. "How is reciting a dead language going to help you in Spanish?"
Xander snorted before he calmly explained. "I'm learning some Latin phrases so that I can compare them with the Spanish translations. If I'm not completely retarded, I'm pretty sure that Spanish is Latin based, right? I spoke with Mr. Montenegro last week and he told me that I've got a solid B in the class but there was no way I could get an A even if I aced the final. So I asked about extra credit – hence the special project. Of course, you would know that if you'd been around lately."
Spike shook his head, confused at the jibe. "I have been around, Xander. The last few weeks, I've done nothing but go to my own classes and then spend time with you."
"But who are you doing this for, Spike? Me or you?"
The older boy sighed and moved so he was sitting on the table, facing the young boy sitting before him.
"You, Xander," he whispered, his voice fierce and cutting, all whispered intensity. "It's always been about you."
Xander nodded slowly, even though Spike could see in the hazel eyes that the sable haired boy didn't honestly believe him. Silently, Spike slipped into his lap to claim the boy's lips in a gently demanding kiss. Giles, the library, the Latin, all but forgotten as they silently kissed.
