Summary: Spike has suspicions

Spike felt very irritated. He had thought they had made good progress with Angel towards starting their relationship again from where they had left it when Angel had gotten his soul over a century ago. They had slowly gotten closer and there had been a lot less fighting between them. He did suspect that no one else had noticed anything since they still acted the same when other people were present but when they were alone things were quite different. They had talked about the years they had roamed Europe together wrecking havoc and how much fun they had had then. They had also talked about the year Spike and Dru had come to Sunnydale and Angelus had returned. They had cleared some misunderstandings and they had both apologized for things done and said before. Their relationship had this far stayed mostly platonic but there had been kisses and small touches that held a promise about something more.

Everything had looked good and Spike had thought that Angel was ready to tell others about them as well. However, now it seemed the older vampire had disappeared without a word. Or actually that wasn't exactly true. Angel had told his friends and half the company that he was leaving the town for a few days. Spike was pretty sure that he was the only one Angel hadn't said anything. He couldn't understand why. He had thought everything was going well but now Angel had gone away without a word. Spike felt like he had been cast away. Was Angel regretting them growing closer again? Was this Angel's way of telling him that it wasn't going to happen? It would fit the pattern. The last time Angel got problems he ran away. Of course that was already over a century ago but maybe bad habits died hard.

Things had gotten even worse when Spike had heard where Angel had gone. He had tried to ask Angel's friends about it but they wouldn't say anything. Then he had heard a piece of conversation that wasn't obviously meant for his ears. He hadn't believed his ears first but then he had happened to see a copy of the flight confirmation. It seemed he had been dumped because of Buffy since Angel had gone to Rome. Of course someone could argue that he hadn't actually been dumped since their relationship hadn't been official. They hadn't told anyone about it yet. Angel had now been gone for two days and Spike hadn't received any word from him. He had spent his nights killing as many demons as possible and getting very drunk. During the days he slept in his own apartment and felt sorry for himself.

Three days after Angel had made his disappearing act Spike received a delivery. He was a bit suspicious of what it could be but when he opened the box he found a box full of chocolates and a note. The note just said; "My apartment, tonight." Spike didn't have to wonder who the note was from since he would have recognized Angel's handwriting anywhere. He had no idea what to think about the note. It seemed Angel had returned to town and now wanted to see Spike. He was just afraid what it would be about. Was Angel going to let him down gently or what? He paced nervously around his apartment while he waited for the sun to go down so that he could make his way to the Wolfram & Hart building. He managed to create all kinds of bad scenarios in his mind and when it was finally time for him to leave he was certain that Angel was going to tell him that it was over and that there would never be anything between them.

When Spike got to the office he walked to Angel's office with slow steps. Part of him really didn't want to go up to Angel's apartment. He just wanted to go somewhere and drink until he couldn't feel anything anymore. He was absolutely certain that Angel was going to tell him that he had been replaced. Finally he reached the elevator but it took him a few minutes to press the button for the elevator and even when the elevator doors opened he hesitated for a while before stepping in. Calling himself with all kind of names in his head he squared his shoulders and decided to face the music. Delaying it wouldn't make it better.

When the elevator doors opened to Angel's apartment Spike was sure he had come to the wrong place. The next thought he had was that Angel was waiting someone else too and was preparing for that. The whole apartment was filled with lighted candles and the lights were low. It looked really romantic and Spike sacrificed one thought to how nice it would be if someone did something like this for him. Then he pushed those thoughts out of his head and stepped into the apartment in search of Angel. He wanted to get this whole thing over with so that he could go and drown it all into several bottles of whiskey. Then Angel was there in front of him.

"I'm glad you could make it, Spike. Come on sit down. There is something I want to talk with you."

"I prefer standing, thanks." Spike wrapped his duster around himself like it would act like a shield. "Just tell me and get it over with."

"This would be easier if you were sitting down. It would be more comfortable."

"I don't care." Spike was getting irritated. Why couldn't Angel just tell him? Why this had to be so difficult? "This isn't the first time I've been dumped for someone else. I'm not some fragile little girl. I don't need to be sitting down when I'm told that I've been cast aside for someone better. I know that you went to Rome and are back together with Buffy." Spike knew he was ranting but he didn't care. He was just getting started. "Is she coming here? Are all these candles for her? Should I be getting out of your way? I'm sure you don't want..."

Spike's rant was cut short when his mouth was otherwise occupied. It took him a while to realize that Angel was kissing him with fervor and didn't seem like he was going to give up anytime soon. When Angel finally drew back Spike found his face cupped by Angel's large hands and their foreheads still touching. He had no idea what to say.

"Knew that would get you to shut up. First of all I'm not back together with Buffy. I don't know what got you thinking that. Yes, I did go to Rome but it didn't have anything to do with Buffy. I didn't tell you that I was going to Rome because I knew you would overreact. All these preparations are for you. I want to make our relationship official. I want to take you to bed and make love to you all night long. And possibly the whole day tomorrow too. I want to tell everyone that you belong to me and no one else can touch you."

Once in his life Spike was speechless. He had been so certain that Angel didn't want him and now it seemed Angel did want him very much. Angel was even going to tell his friends about them. He raised his eyes so that he was looking straight at Angel's eyes and tried to see the truth there. He didn't have to search for long. Angel's eyes were practically shining with caring and Spike even let himself believe there was love hidden there too. Finally he managed to whisper.

"Take me to bed."

Awwwww! Very sweet and very much what Spike needed; he's always been so unsure of things in any relationship. Good for Angel. ^_^

I loved it! It was so Spike and Angel, with Angel trying to protect Spike, but managing to screw it up anyway; and Spike being insecure but desperate to keep his image.

There's Spike for you, always expecting to be cast aside. It's nice to see him be wrong, for once.
