New Copyright Laws?

Not a fic, but this will affect the community:

The World Intellectual Property Organization is pushing for new copyright laws that the United States is trying to pull across the internet. Treasure your artwork and writing as yours? Read more.

I'm crossposting like crazy, but this needs to be said.

It's all been debunked now. Go to Fandom wank to see.

Do you mean that the existance/potential existance of the law has been debunked, or that whether or not it would threaten fanfic has been debunked?

The closest thing I could find to debunking the law itself is in the comments:
× it's most recent view of the treaty is from Sep. 2005

× in the form letter it says: " Next week, representatives at WIPO will decide whether to hold a diplomatic conference to adopt the treaty in early 2006."

I'm just curious, because if there's a debunk of the law somewhere, I'd like to point it out to some people ;)

Well, it has to do with that earlier post you must have seen before this? From the person in the VH fandom. So I think that's where this all started. I won't debate the law stuff with you, there are other people that have gone over this, I think. On [livejournal.com profile] darker_spike it was brought up and then links and informations shared that seemed to debunk it, yes. It's an flocked community, so I can't link you, but that is my understanding.

Basically it seems that since fan fic is already breaking copyright, it seems an unlikely target for anyone to want to claim, or that was one of the arguments I saw. *shrugs*

I see. Thank for the info that you could provide :)

Ummm, basically this wouldn't actually effect fanfic, or really most of the US... it basically has to due with the MCA and International Treaties and Sovereinty, and the fact that no US treaty can effect US laws without Congress making it a law... which will never happen because this would also effect major companies copyrights... oh, and for those who think that fanfic isn't copyrighted, it is to a certain degree. The story line and idea and original characters are essentially copyrighted (it's a type of intellectual property), it's just the borrowed characters and universe that aren't copyrighted. Yeah, it's all fun and complex.
